COATINGS & SERVICES SHOP
( CODE 971), PRODUCTIONRESOURCES DEPARTMENT
ofPORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD
. Responsibilities You will prepare metal surfaces for painting by scaling, sanding, cleaning, masking, etc. as necessary. You will prepare wood surfaces for painting by removing old paint, filling cracks and holes, sanding and applying fillers and base coats. You will mix paints and other surfacing materials. You will paint surfaces with various types of paints, varnish, enamel, and epoxy coatings, employing brushes, paint rollers, and spray equipment. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is:ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION
: Applying coating materials to various surfaces by any of the accepted methods which included brushing, rolling, spraying, cutting-in, overflowing and troweling to insure a smooth-textured and decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirements. Preparing surfaces; matching, tinting, toning, and blending coating materials with various additives. Utilizing standard coating methods such as brushing, rolling, and spraying to accomplish coating work including camouflage work. Applying methods and techniques such as cutting-in techniques and dip and overflow methods so that surfaces are free from skips, runs, and drips. Reading and following directions that explain how to apply and use prepared solvents and thin, mix, and stir coating materials. Masking and letter-stencil jobs; removing grease, scale, rust, dirt, and old paint from surfaces so that coating materials will adhere properly. Applying fillers and base coats in accordance with specific instructions.
