Job Description

  • This position is open to current city employees who are permanent in the civil service title of 'Steam Fitter's Helper', or to those who have registered to take exam #5132.
  • The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order.
The New York City Police Department strives to foster a safe and fair city through the strategic deployment of resources, focusing on both crime prevention and addressing quality-of-life concerns while building lasting community relationships. The Building Maintenance Section (BMS) Is responsible for the repair and maintenance of over 250 Department facilities citywide. In 2023, BMS accepted 36,384 different types of job requests and responds to emergencies 24 hours per day, while also being responsible for numerous and varied command buildouts that supported Department initiatives. Under direct supervision, the selected candidate will perform the following duties:
  • Assists in doing work relating to piping and equipment for heating, air conditioning, compressed air and processing systems;
  • Assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of piping and equipment in air, steam and hot water heating, air conditioning and processing systems;
  • Assists in the installation of boilers, feedwater, vacuum and condensate equipment;
  • Assists in the installation of fuel oil piping and related equipment;
  • Assists in taking on-the job measurements and lays out work from plans, specifications and/or sketches;
  • May drive a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties; and
  • Performs related work.

STEAM FITTER'S HELPER
  • 91926 Minimum Qualifications 1.
Three years of full-time satisfactory mechanical experience as a Steam Fitter's Helper acquired within the last 10 years; or 2. At least one and one-half years of full-time satisfactory mechanical experience as a Steam Fitter's Helper acquired within the last 10 years plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade, vocational or technical high school to make up the equivalent of three years of acceptable experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade, vocational or technical school. Preferred Skills
  • Experience is a must
  • The ability to evaluate and handle multiple projects and priorities
