Job Description

Position Summary:
The Pipe Layer plays a critical role in the successful delivery of Garrett Excavating's projects. This position is responsible for the accurate installation of underground utility systems, including sanitary sewer, storm sewer, fire lines, and domestic water lines. Working closely with the Foreman, Heavy Equipment Operators, and site crew, the Pipe Layer ensures all underground work is installed safely, efficiently, and in strict accordance with project plans, specifications, and industry standards.
Primary Duties:
Lead by example on all job sites. Install utilities including sanitary sewer, storm water, fire, and domestic lines. Perform all phases of pipe installation, including trench preparation, pipe placement, alignment, bedding, backfill coordination, and compaction. Verify line and grade using lasers, levels, and grade stakes to ensure proper installation. Execute work based on construction drawings, utility plans, profiles, and specifications. Ensure proper installation of structures such as manholes, catch basins, inlets, valve boxes, hydrants, cleanouts, and service connections. Install pipe materials including PVC, ductile iron, HDPE, and concrete pipe as required by project specifications. Perform pipe testing and inspection preparation, including air tests, mandrel testing, pressure testing, and visual inspections as required. Assist with utility locates, verification of existing utilities, and protection of existing infrastructure. Assist in completion of job documentation including production tracking, as-builts, etc. Maintain a team-first approach by assisting with general site tasks as needed to support safe, efficient project completion. Adapt to varying site conditions, soil types, weather, and project constraints to maintain productivity year-round. Maintain and exceed all safety requirements set forth by Garrett Excavating and OSHA.
Minimum Qualifications:
Proven experience installing underground utilities in a heavy civil or site development environment. Minimum of 4 years of pipe laying experience with sanitary sewer, storm sewer, fire lines, and domestic water systems. Strong knowledge of pipe installation methods, bedding requirements, and backfill practices. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, profiles, and grade information. Working knowledge of trench safety requirements and OSHA excavation standards. Experience working around heavy equipment in active excavation environments. Coachable, dependable, and committed to continuous improvement. Strong team player with the ability to communicate effectively with crew members and supervisors. Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and address installation challenges in the field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Class A Commercial Drivers License. OSHA 30 Construction Certification. Previous leadership and/or management experience Competent Person certified.
