Job Description

Hydro Operator The Deschutes Valley Water District (DVWD) owns and operates a hydroelectric dam and powerhouse on the Crooked River near Culver Oregon. The District is seeking an individual to fill the role of Hydro Operator. While this position does not require previous experience in the hydroelectric field, an ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience in the following:
  • Extensive knowledge and use of hand and power tools
  • Knowledge and experience with basic industrial maintenance activities
  • Basic Welding/Cutting/Fabrication skills
  • Understanding in hydraulic and piping systems
  • Knowledge and experience of layout procedure and tools
  • Experience with lifting and rigging procedures Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Perform any duties required in the operation of the powerhouse and dam according to general system or plant operating orders or making changes in operations as necessary
  • Perform duties required to service and maintain equipment
  • Make inspection tours and maintain accurate and detailed records
  • Follow instructions from supervisor
  • Consult with construction plans
  • Use tools and equipment to complete daily tasks
  • Use a computer to complete daily tasks, documentation and communication
  • Follow all health and safety regulations
  • Ensure proper PPE is worn for each assigned task
  • Complete all assigned tasks in a timely and efficient manner
  • Safely operate a variety of tools and equipment
  • Ensure equipment and tools are cleaned and stored properly Requirements and Qualifications
  • High school degree or equivalent educational experience; vocational school or trade apprenticeships a plus
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to physically stand, bend, squat and maneuver at times in tight, cramped quarters
  • Willing to work in adverse environments, i.e. hot, noisy, or isolated.
  • Willing to work at heights and around water
  • Ability to work with and wear respiratory protection.
  • Reach with hands and arms above shoulder level and at shoulder level
  • Walk, stand, stoop, kneel, and bend for prolonged periods of time
  • Grip and manually manipulate, often with repetitive motion, items such as, but not limited to, hand tools and machine parts
  • Read and identify the labels, gauges, dials, and indicators typically encountered in performing job duties
  • The ability to work a rotating schedule to cover weekends/holidays, as well be on call in certain situations
  • Positive attitude and excellent work ethic
  • Able to work independently or as an active member of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication with District team
  • Driver's License Required.
CDL and/or water operator's license a plus Benefits include a comprehensive benefit package including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance for the employee and family (100% of premiums paid along with employee reimbursement for certain out-of-pocket expenses), Oregon PERS/Public Service Retirement Plan (OPSRP) with the employee's 6% contribution paid by the District, HRA account for medical-related expenses, a 457 deferred compensation plan with employer matching up to 5.5%, and additional voluntary supplemental benefit options. Full-time work of 40 hrs. per week with 9 paid holidays and paid leave accruals according to collective bargaining agreement with IBEW Local 125.
