- Institutions Operations Job Classification Title Plumber II (S) Position Number 60063753 Grade NC08 About Us The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Description of Work Position performs journey duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of air, gas, water, and waste disposal systems. Routine work assignments are in the nature of location of needed repair, and assignments involving work of special or unusual nature are accompanied by specific instructions. The incumbent exercises considerable independence in performance of routine work, but unprecedented assignments are usually discussed with or supervised by a foreman. Work is reviewed by foreman through inspection of work in progress and on the basis of satisfactory operation of equipment repaired or installed. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences This position reports to the Maintenance Supervisor at a close custody male correctional facility and provides facility maintenance/plumbing support. Job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: Performing journey level duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of air, gas, water, and waste disposal systems. Performing routine work assignments are in the nature of position as well as needed repair, and assignments involving work of special or unusual nature that are accompanied by specific instructions. Exercising considerable independence in performance of routine work, but unprecedented assignments are usually discussed with or supervised by foreman. Being reviewed by foreman through inspection of work in progress and on the basis of satisfactory operation of equipment repaired or installed. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits with established working hours of Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need. The salary grade for this position is NC08 Salary Range ($39,244 - $68,679). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.
About Granville Correctional Institution:
Granville Correctional Institution houses close custody offenders in both single cells and dormitories. The facility houses offenders assigned to various restrictive housing and control statuses and some pre-trial safekeepers. The prison's high-security unit houses the state's most violent and assaultive offenders. The prison offers a wide variety of educational and vocational programs and is home to one of the prison system's four schools for young offenders. Formerly known as Polk Correction Institution, the facility opened in 1997, replacing the former Polk Youth Institution on Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh, at the current site of the NC Museum of Art. Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now must meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the "Minimum Education and Experience" listed from the OSHR class specification as seen in the next section below. Management Preferences:
Documented working knowledge of the methods of installation and repair of plumbing systems.
