Utility Specialist II

Performs specialized maintenance work in an assigned section of the Public Utilities Department.

• Disassemble and inspect pump/motor assemblies ranging from 3 to 90 horsepower.

Diagnose mechanical/electrical issues and identify components in need of repair/replacement. Repair/replace worn or damaged parts, such as seals, bearings, impellers, and motors, ensuring that all components are in optimal condition for performance. Conduct precision reassembly and testing to confirm that pumps adhere to manufactures standards/tolerances, while also performing routine maintenance and preventative services on various pump systems.

• Maintain detailed service records, inspection reports, parts inventory, and strictly follow all established safety protocols, including lockout /tagout procedures.
• Safey operate forklift to transport pumps, parts, and materials throughout facility.

Safely operate crane trucks and hoists for lifting, positioning, and movement of heavy pumps/loads. Conduct pre-operation inspections and perform routine maintenance on lifting equipment to ensure optimal functionality and safety. Ensure proper rigging and load balancing, adhering to established lifting safety standards. Assist with the loading and unloading of equipment for transport to job sites, and provide support to field crews during pump installations, removals, and emergency repairs as required.

• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment in workshop and field settings.
• Employ a diverse array of hand and power tools, such as torque wrenches, pullers, presses, grinders, and precision measuring devices, to effectively conduct repairs and rebuilds of pumps. This comprehensive toolkit enables the execution of intricate tasks essential for maintaining optimal pump functionality.
• Utilize diagnostic and testing instruments, including multimeters, megohm meters, and clamps meters, to assess the performance of electrical components and systems. This evaluation process is crucial for identifying and addressing electrical issues in submersible pumps, such as motor failures, insulation breakdowns, and control panel malfunctions.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to accurately diagnose faults and implement appropriate repair strategies. Conduct electrical testing on motors, inspecting and replacing components like power cables while also assessing troubleshooting pump system issues in both the shop and in a field setting.
• May assist in performing skilled manual labor work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of utility collection, transmission, and distribution systems, including a variety of manual labor tasks.
• May assist in locating and marking underground utility lines; locates existing utilities from blueprints; monitors and pumps down high-level stations; cuts sewer lines using chop saw; repairs sewer lines; repairs and installs gravity lines; performs grouting of service/gravity lines; cleans blockages, lateral lines, and excavation areas; inspects manholes and lift stations after relining; rebuilds pumps; installs, repairs, or replaces valves; maintains and paints pumps, motors, pipes; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.

• Responds to after-hours emergency calls when scheduled for on-call duty; repairs main/service breaks; evaluates service calls, determines amount of water loss, and determines needed manpower, equipment, parts, and materials; determines need to request location of utility services; requests bacteria samples from laboratory.
• Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
• Prepares, completes and/or receives various forms, reports, correspondence, checklists, work orders, valve isolation forms, valve maintenance forms, data recorder sheets, pump activity reports, lift station sheets, maintenance reports, charts, timecards, leave requests, or other documents.
• Communicate with supervisors, employees, other divisions, contractors, utility companies, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
• High school diploma or GED
• required.
• One (1) year of related experience.
• Fingerprinting Required.
• Must possess and maintain a Wastewater Collections C Certification within two (2) years of hire, require possession of a Class B Commercial Driver's license with tanker and hazardous materials endorsements or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES

• Must possess and maintain a Wastewater Collections Level III Certification within two (2) years of hire.
• Requires possession of a Class B Commercial Driver's license with tanker and hazardous materials endorsement or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.

Salary offers above the minimum pay grade may be considered based on qualifications. Essential Employees may be required to work during an undeclared or declared emergency. The County's Administrative Office will determine who will be required to work on an incident-by-incident basis.
