About Us Fossil Adventuresi operates multiple commercial fossil quarries in the Green River Formation near Kemmerer, Wyoming. Our operations include both tourism-based quarry experiences (Fossil Lake Safari) and the collection of high-quality fossil specimens for resale.
Job Description:
We are seeking a hardworking, dependable individual to join our team as a Professional Fossil Collector. This is not a typical outdoor job—this is extremely physically demanding labor in a rugged quarry environment. This position will primarily work at our 18" layer quarry near Fossil Butte National Monument , splitting rock to uncover fossil fish. This is not the type of fossil collecting you see in movies where someone is carefully brushing dirt off a dinosaur bone. The work involves splitting and moving large slabs of limestone to locate fossil fish hidden beneath the surface. Success in this role requires strength, endurance, the ability to take direction well, and a strong team-oriented mindset.
What You'll Do:
Split large limestone blocks using hand tools (primarily hammers and chisels) Identify and carefully extract fossil fish from rock layers Lift, move, and reposition heavy rock slabs (often well over 100 lbs ) Perform frequent cutting of rock using gas-powered cutoff saws and tile saws Work extended shifts outdoors in varying weather conditions Operate under artificial lighting during nighttime shifts to better identify fossils Follow direction from supervisors and work effectively as part of a team Maintain a safe and productive work environment
Work Environment & Conditions:
Extremely physical work
  • swinging a hammer for hours at a time Frequent heavy lifting ( 100+ lbs regularly ) Exposure to the elements all day (heat, sun, wind, dust, and altitude) Work schedules may vary and often include night shifts Remote quarry location
  • no on-site transportation provided
Qualifications:
Strong work ethic and dependability (show up on time, ready to work) Ability to take direction well and work as part of a team Physically strong with high endurance and stamina Comfortable performing manual labor for extended periods Able to work in harsh outdoor conditions without complaint Must have reliable transportation to and from the quarry Preferred Background (Not Required): Experience in physically demanding jobs such as: Ranch work Landscaping Construction Mining or quarry work Any role involving heavy manual labor
Additional Preferred Experience:
Prior experience collecting fossils from the 18" layer of the Green River Formation Heavy equipment operating experience (Candidates with the above experience may qualify for higher starting pay.)
Compensation & Benefits:
Starting pay: $20+/hour DOE (depending on experience) Higher starting wages available for candidates with significant relevant experience Full-time hours (40 per week)
Schedule & Duration:
Full-time (40 hours/week), starting ASAP Schedule may vary and often includes night shifts Position is seasonal , with an end date dependent on weather, but will likely run into
October Location & Housing:
Preference given to candidates local to Kemmerer, Wyoming Out-of-area applicants are welcome to apply, but must arrange their own housing for the duration of employment Reliable transportation to the quarry is required
