Rigger

Crane operator signal persons or riggers are the crane operator's "eyes and ears on the ground." Their signals and communications with the operator are crucial in preventing crane accidents and crane operators should never work without a qualified signal person.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

Ø Know the types of signals used at the work site. Ø Can competently use those signals Ø Know the crane equipment, its limitations and all the dynamics involved in crane and boom movement and lifting Ø Demonstrate their knowledge through oral, written, and practical testing Ø Are evaluated by a third-party or in-house Qualified Evaluator. Ø Identify and attach rigging with knowledge of hitch configurations and load angle factors, rigging capacities, and load integrity Ø Understand load dynamics and associated hazards Ø Estimate load weight and center of gravity Ø Identify lift points Ø Determine and select rigging based on loading Ø Perform pre-use inspection of rigging and lift points Ø Understand periodic inspection criteria Ø Working knowledge of hoisting equipment, winches, jacks, industrial rollers, and similar equipment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Ø Signal or verbally direct workers engaged in hoisting and moving loads to ensure safety of workers and materials. Ø Communicate with coworkers to coordinate installations or repairs. Ø Test rigging to ensure safety and reliability. Ø Test mechanical systems to ensure proper functioning. Ø Attach loads to rigging to provide support or prepare them for moving, using hand and power tools. Ø Attach rigging to objects so they can be moved. Ø Select gear such as cables, pulleys, and winches, according to load weights and sizes, facilities, and work schedules. Ø Determine types of equipment, tools, or materials needed for jobs. Ø Control movement of heavy equipment through narrow openings or confined spaces, using chainfalls, gin poles, gallows frames, and other equipment. Ø Operate cranes, hoists, or other moving or lifting equipment. Ø Tilt, dip, and turn suspended loads to maneuver over, under, or around obstacles, using multi-point suspension techniques. Ø Move materials, equipment, or supplies. Ø Install ground rigging for yarding lines, attaching chokers to logs and to the lines. Ø Attach rigging to objects so they can be moved. Ø Align, level, and anchor machinery. Ø Fabricate, set up, and repair rigging, supporting structures, hoists, and pulling gear, using hand and power tools. Ø Manipulate rigging lines, hoists, and pulling gear to move or support materials such as heavy equipment, ships, or theatrical sets. Ø Clean and dress machine surfaces and component parts. Ø Clean equipment, parts, or tools to repair or maintain them in good working order. Ø Attach pulleys and blocks to fixed overhead structures such as beams, ceilings, and gin pole booms, using bolts and clamps. Ø Dismantle and store rigging equipment after use. Ø Dismantle heavy equipment or machinery.

SPECIFIC EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSING REQUIRED

Ø High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Ø Valid driver's license. Ø Able to read, understand, and follow safety procedures & policies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Ø Required to work outside for extended periods of time, in potentially adverse weather conditions. Ø Must be physically fit, able to perform heavy work, and able to lift up to 40 lbs. unassisted.

Ø Limited travel required based on work assignment.
