Job Title:
Sheet Metal Mechanic Job Description The Sheet Metal Mechanic installs, measures, cuts, and assembles galvanized and double-wall sheet metal ductwork in a commercial and industrial setting. This role involves working on an Air Force Base, using hand and power tools to install duct systems and hang VAV boxes as part of HVAC installations. The position offers long-term, steady work on a current project with additional projects scheduled afterward. Responsibilities Install galvanized and double-wall sheet metal ductwork according to project specifications and drawings. Measure, cut, and fit sheet metal duct to ensure accurate and secure installation. Hang and install VAV (Variable Air Volume) boxes as part of HVAC systems. Use a variety of hand tools and power tools safely and effectively during installation and assembly. Install duct hangers and supports to secure ductwork in place. Work as part of a construction team on an Air Force Base, following all site rules and safety protocols. Coordinate with other trades and team members to ensure efficient workflow and timely project completion. Inspect completed work to confirm alignment, fit, and quality of duct installations. Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition. Follow all safety procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Essential Skills Proven experience installing sheet metal ductwork in a construction or mechanical environment. Hands-on experience with duct installation, including hangers and HVAC-related duct systems. Ability to read and follow basic installation directions and measurements for sheet metal duct. Proficiency using hand tools and power tools required for sheet metal and duct installation. Mechanical aptitude and understanding of how ductwork integrates into HVAC systems. Capability to work full shifts on your feet and perform physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and working at heights as required. Reliability and punctuality to work scheduled hours on a long-term project. Must provide and use basic hand tools needed for sheet metal and duct installation. Commitment to following safety practices and using required PPE at all times. Additional Skills & Qualifications Scissor lift experience is a plus and may be used to access elevated work areas. Previous experience working on large commercial or industrial construction projects is beneficial. Familiarity with HVAC systems and components beyond ductwork is an advantage. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and team members on a busy job site. Willingness to work a 90-day contract-to-hire arrangement with potential for long-term employment. Work Environment This position is based on an Air Force Base job site within a construction and mechanical installation environment. You will typically work four 10-hour shifts, Monday through Friday, from 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM, providing a predictable and consistent schedule. The work is hands-on and physically active, often involving working at heights, around other trades, and in areas where heavy equipment and power tools are in use. Proper personal protective equipment is required at all times, including a hard hat, steel-toe boots, safety glasses, gloves, and a high-visibility T-shirt or vest. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Melbourne, FL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $28.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
