Job Description
Overview The Assistant Farm Manager is a hands-on operations leader who partners closely with the Farm Manager to oversee daily poultry farm operations, support team performance, and ensure animal welfare and operational standards are consistently met. This role is a mix of leadership and execution. You will be directly involved in early morning farm operations, team coordination, equipment oversight, and administrative responsibilities, while also stepping in to support all aspects of poultry husbandry and farm management when needed. You will be accountable for the health and humane care of the birds, the reliability and performance of the operation, and supporting a small team to run efficiently day to day. Key Responsibilities Daily Farm Operations Start each day early morning around 5:30 AM to ensure team coverage and operational readiness Conduct morning rounds across poultry houses, identifying any abnormalities or issues Perform routine inspections of mechanical rooms and farm equipment Oversee and support egg collection, including transporting eggs as needed Complete house inspections and participate in weekly mechanical and operational checks Assist with groundskeeping and farm upkeep including use of tractors, mowers, and other equipment Poultry Operations & Animal Care Support poultry house operators and ensure they can independently manage daily responsibilities Maintain hands-on involvement in bird care including egg handling, monitoring flock health, and general husbandry Assist with weekend responsibilities such as sample collection and blood draws Perform or support humane euthanasia of birds when required Ensure all animal care practices align with biosecurity and welfare standards Administrative Responsibilities Process payroll on a biweekly basis Manage feed ordering, typically on a weekly schedule Coordinate with labs for testing schedules and deliveries Order supplies and ensure proper inventory levels Create and manage employee and animal care schedules Ensure vendors are compliant with PPE requirements and farm protocols Maintain accurate documentation and records related to operations and compliance Team Leadership & Support Help lead and support a team of approximately 5 employees Ensure staff are properly trained, accountable, and supported in daily responsibilities Communicate clearly with leadership and team members to keep operations running smoothly Partner with Farm Manager and other Assistant Managers on day to day priorities Biosecurity & Safety Maintain strict adherence to all biosecurity protocols Ensure proper use of PPE including respirators, masks, gloves, and protective suits Monitor and enforce proper safety procedures for employees and vendors On Call & Work Environment Serve as an on call resource for alarm events or urgent issues, including overnight calls Respond to emergencies or operational disruptions in a timely manner Work in varying weather conditions and be available during inclement weather Schedule Typically Saturday through Wednesday schedule Includes early mornings, weekends, holidays, and on call responsibilities Qualifications Experience & Education Experience in agriculture, poultry, livestock, or hands-on farm operations preferred Bachelor's degree in Animal Science or related field is a plus but not required Entry level candidates may be considered with strong relevant experience and willingness to learn Skills & Attributes Reliable and dependable, especially in a high responsibility, all weather environment Comfortable with hands-on farm work and animal care Strong attention to detail and ability to spot operational issues early Mechanically inclined and comfortable working with farm equipment Able to balance physical work with administrative responsibilities Willingness to be flexible and respond to urgent needs Work Environment This is a physically active role in a farm setting involving poultry housing, outdoor work, and mechanical areas. The position requires working with live animals, exposure to dust and varying conditions, and regular use of PPE.
