SALARY:
Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-2, in accordance with Kanawha County Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level
EVALUATION
Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310 and
KCS G48A.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Principal is the "professional educator who functions as an agent of the county board and has responsibility for the supervision, management and control of a school or schools within the guidelines established by the bounty board. The principal's major area of responsibility is the general supervision of all the schools and all school activities involving students, teachers and other school personnel." (Pursuant to WV Code §18A-1-1)
SUPERVISES
Counselors, teachers, student teachers, secretary, aides, custodians, cooks and volunteers.
NOTE:
The Building Principal will assign duties and responsibilities to the Assistant Principal.
GENERAL PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
An employee working for Kanawha County Schools is expected to comply with all the Kanawha County Schools Policies and Procedures, including maintaining regular attendance and completing all required training. Employees are required to follow all safety rules to maintain a safe workplace.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Job Duties. Assists staff in the development of an instructional program that provides for various student levels, interests and learning styles. Implements a procedure for instructional placement of new enrollees. Follows the mandated instructional time allocations. Supports the use of varied instructional strategies. Encourages the use of instructional technology. Encourages the use of multiple procedures for the evaluation of student achievement. Evaluates instructional programs periodically and utilizes results in planning. Implements a system to monitor student progress. Assists in supervising the implementation of the Programs of Study, Content Standards and Objectives as well as county and state policies. Demonstrates knowledge of child growth and development. Assists in the design and implementation of an effective scheduling procedure. Informs the community of existing instructional programs and activities. Works with faculty to plan and implement staff development programs. Upgrades professional skills annually. Knowledge and ability to analyze SAT scores and benchmarks
CURRICULUM
Coordinates the textbook utilization process. Recommends alternatives and/or changes needed in curriculum to best meet the needs of students. Assists in developing guidelines for scheduling students. Assists in the design and implementation of an effective scheduling procedure. Assumes special project assignments. Works with faculty to plan and implement staff development programs. Manages the special education process. Works cooperatively with business and industry in establishing and monitoring programs of study. Works cooperatively with institutions of higher learning in developing and articulating agreements to support career cluster format. Participates in summer training/staff development and job shadowing in each career cluster. Stays current with research and development in trends for education and career development locally, nationally and internationally. Attends special training as needed.
ADMINISTRATIVE OPERATIONS AND FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
Works a flexible schedule (i.e., daily, yearly). May serve as principal in the absence of the regular principal. Demonstrates good judgment and decision making skills. Interprets and implements board policy. Provides efficient organization for daily school operations. Prepares and implements short and long range plans. Assists in maintaining discipline throughout the student body. Works with staff, students and parents to design and maintain an effective discipline policy. Administers effective attendance procedures. Assists in organizing the management of extracurricular activities. Communicates information, policies, and procedures to students. Provides parents with regular student progress reports. Communicates regularly with school support organizations (PAC, PTA, Athletic Boosters, LSIC etc.). Assists in the supervision of assignments/services provided in the school. Recognizes student and staff contributions and accomplishments. Participates with staff in the development of continuing education programs based on school needs. Provides orientation and support for substitute teachers. Assists the principal in identifying needs for facility improvements. Encourages staff and students to maintain an attractive environment. Follows the established evaluation procedures for evaluating all school staff. Utilizes self-appraisal for the improvement of administrative skills. Accepts assignments and completes reports. Assists in the supervision of extra-curricular/after hour school activities. Accepts other duties as may be assigned. In addition to established laws, policies, rules and regulations, administrator responsibilities shall include: Demonstrate instructional leadership to enhance school effectiveness by improving instruction and augmenting student performance. Provide purpose and direction for schools/county. Demonstrates cognitive skills to gather, analyze and synthesize information to reach goals. Manage group behaviors to achieve consensus. Enhances quality of total school/county organizations. Organizes and delegates to accomplish goals. Communicates effectively. Provides leadership in the implementation of technology standards. QUALIFICATIONS
Meet the qualifications outlined in WV Code §18A-3-2a and §18A-2-9. Valid teaching certificate; Master's degree; Minimum of three (3) years secondary experience; Experience in workshop and staff development organization, development and implementation; Extensive knowledge of high school philosophy and supporting research; Knowledge and training vertical teaming; Training in such areas as cooperative learning, instructional strategies, etc.; West Virginia administrative (principal's) Certificate of eligibility; Attended Leadership Academy, or agree to participate in the next scheduled session; Demonstrated knowledge of current instructional strategies; Strong commitment to professional growth as evidenced by recent coursework, staff development activities, and attendance at seminars or conferences; In-depth knowledge of the Effective Schools Research and School Improvement Process; Strong understanding and belief in the importance of community and parent involvement and have knowledge of strategies to insure such involvement. In-depth knowledge of shared decision making strategies. Experience in such curricular areas as inclusion, alternative assessment, process writing, and integrated teaching strategies. Computer – prefer experience with student data bases, spread sheets, graphics, WVEIS, etc.; Knowledge of special education rules and procedures; Knowledge of program assessment and evaluation including standardized test scores and other data; Experience in staff training or facilitation; Knowledge of teacher supervision and personnel evaluation; Experience in peer mediation and conflict resolution strategies.
