Jul 1, 2026 Job Description The Assistant Principal, in close collaboration with the Principal and other members of the campus administration, is responsible for providing leadership in the areas of school culture, restorative practices, and discipline. Under the oversight of the principal/director, the AP is charged with fostering a unified student community centered on excellence and scholarship. In alignment with the district and principal vision, the

supports the implementation of the routines and responses needed to create learning cultures where all students persevere through challenges, embrace a growth mindset, and support the achievement of others. supports the approaches, rituals, routines, and community events that create a welcoming, inclusive and supportive community. actively manages the social emotional and behavioral tiered support and response systems, including student discipline systems., In partnership with principals, the AP will be a primary contact with families and students regarding persistent and serious student discipline issues, and will actively support the building of strong relationships between parents/guardians and school staff. The AP works with school leaders and staff to preserve the safety and integrity of the learning climate while maximizing students' opportunity to learn. The AP is accountable for actively co-creating a restorative community focused on growth and scholarship.
Essential Functions:
With oversight from the
Principal:
Culture of Safety and Well-being Supports the development of a vibrant, healthy, and restorative school culture that maintains high accountability paired with high support Develops, establishes, and maintains clear expectations, effective routines, and any protocols needed for common spaces, including cafeteria, recess, arrival & dismissal, hallway transitions, and restrooms Develops, establishes, and maintains clear expectations for supervision of before and/or after school duties (i.e. breakfast, late room, courtyard supervision) Recommends, plans, and supervises campus based policies and procedures related to attendance in alignment with district policies and procedures Collaborates with principal and identified campus team members to coordinate, support, and monitor implementation of SEL curriculum and universal practices. Participates in and is responsible for monitoring, supporting, and coordinating necessary processes including documentation and debriefing of campus based behavioral health emergency response team/crisis team Oversees the administration of PHA's SEL benchmark assessment system, including universal SEL screening, family surveys, and student surveys Oversees the analysis of SEL benchmark data, develops practices to effectively utilize it in setting priorities, action planning, and providing tiered support Culture of Belonging Supports staff to foster strong relationships among and between students Fosters the development of strong relationships between parents/guardians and faculty Fosters the development of strong relationships between teachers and students In collaboration with the Principal/Director, plans and runs grade-level and school-wide community meetings, as applicable Shares in the planning of logistics for schoolwide events such as field trips, end of year events, etc. In collaboration with the Principal/Director, promotes positive school culture through campus traditions, celebrations, and spirit events Culture of Learning & Growth Contributes to the school's instructional leadership team and supports implementation of the academic program in alignment with district and campus priorities. Ensures alignment between school culture systems and high-quality instruction to maximize student learning and engagement. Supports faculty, staff, and students to build the skills, understandings, and relationships needed to create strong learning communities centered on perseverance, a growth mindset, and achievement for all. In collaboration with the Principal/Director, supports faculty in identifying and implementing routines, classroom set-ups, and approaches needed to support a strong learning culture aligned to the district's curricular approach and to maximize time on learning Conducts frequent walkthroughs to monitor current practice; identify current strengths and growth targets; collaborate with the Principal/Director on action plans In collaboration with CAO and Director of Student Services, principals, and other APs, refines and articulates the PHA vision for restorative practice. Creates a shared understanding of this vision for all campus personnel and for families and students. Takes responsibility for the effective integration of PHA's vision for restorative practice into all aspects of the culture and the campus' response & support systems. Tiered Systems of Support In collaboration with district SEB leadership, principals, and other APs, refines and articulates the PHA vision for SEB tiered systems of support. Creates a shared understanding of this vision for all campus personnel and supports effective implementation. Supports the systems needed to help students build skills, understandings, and relationships necessary to membership in an inclusive and scholarly community Lead and/or co-lead student support team(s), which meet regularly to identify students in need of additional support in the SEB domain, create effective action plans, implement those plans with fidelity, and monitor their effectiveness Works closely with Instructional Leadership Team, Student Support Team, counselors, and teachers to develop individual preventive discipline plans and interventions for students who are at risk of academic, behavioral, or social-emotional issues May be responsible for coordinating the Section 504 Accommodation process; coordinate Section 504 teams, facilitate evaluations as applicable, distribute Section 504 Accommodation plans, and support faculty in ensuring accommodations are implemented with fidelity Student Discipline In partnership with principal, monitors and oversees execution of disciplinary responses and behavioral interventions; provides due process rights to students when responding to disciplinary situations; assigns Restorative Actions and discipline to students as needed; consults with Special Education team members (when applicable) prior to determining disciplinary action In partnership with principal and in response to incidents of student bullying or harassment, complete required investigation, make determinations, coordinate next steps including development of safety plans, restorative actions, and any necessary discipline; Communicates regularly and proactively with parents and guardians regarding student discipline, bullying situations, behavioral situations, and behavior intervention plans Tracks, analyzes, and presents data on student discipline and school culture; works with teachers and school leaders to review and triangulate student disciplinary data to identify individual trends and systemic patterns; uses data to improve disciplinary practices and procedures Manages systems of accountability and communication regarding student discipline; monitors discipline data including documentation of removals, restraints, and major incidents and ensures accuracy throughout the year Development of a High-Performing Faculty Team In partnership with principal, regularly observes in classrooms and provides feedback for growth in relation to a positive, restorative community focused on growth and scholarship; Coaches teachers and instructional staff to improve classroom practices that support student learning, including classroom culture, management, and student engagement. In collaboration with or at direction of principal, designs and facilitates relevant professional development for faculty, staff and campus leaders on school-culture related topics In partnership with principal, supervises and evaluates educators in the areas of classroom culture, management, and student engagement, and provides actionable feedback aligned to school and district expectations including but not limited to restorative culture and SEL skill-building Supports the Principal/Director in identifying key priorities and next steps in this domain, and in creating effective action plans (including related portions of the SIP)
Additional Responsibilities:
Serves as a critical and productive member of the campus administrative team Additional responsibilities and tasks requested or assigned by manager Qualifications Education & Licensure Bachelor's degree required Master's degree in Education, School Leadership, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field preferred Possess a valid Massachusetts DESE Administrator License (Principal/Assistant Principal) as a condition of employment after the first year. Experience Minimum of 5 years of successful experience working in a school setting, including experience with student culture, discipline, instructional coaching, and/or social-emotional support systems. Demonstrated experience implementing and managing tiered systems of support (MTSS/RTI), particularly in the SEB domain. Experience leading or supporting student discipline systems, including investigations, due process, and restorative approaches. Strong knowledge of restorative practices, trauma-informed practices, and positive behavior interventions (PBIS or similar frameworks). Proven ability to build strong relationships with students, staff, and families, including navigating complex and sensitive situations. Experience using data to monitor school culture, student behavior trends, and to drive decision-making and continuous improvement. Strong organizational and leadership skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and systems simultaneously. Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies Excellent communication skills, including the ability to facilitate meetings, lead professional development, and engage families effectively.
