Immediate The Decorah Community School District anticipates the need for an Assistant School Business Official (SBO). The Assistant School Business Official assists the School Business Official in managing the financial and business operations of the Decorah Community School District. This position supports budgeting, accounting, payroll, purchasing, benefits, grants, financial reporting, and compliance activities. The Assistant School Business Official works closely with the School Business Official to ensure efficient and accurate business office operations while developing knowledge and experience in Iowa school finance and district business management.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial and Business Office Support Assist the School Business Official with the development and monitoring of district budgets. Assist with the preparation of financial reports, budget documents, and supporting materials for the Superintendent and Board of Education. Assist with accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, benefits, purchasing, and general accounting functions. Assist the School Business Official in monitoring district expenditures and revenues. Assist with the preparation and submission of state and federal financial reports. Assist with annual audit preparation and implementation of audit recommendations. Assist with grant tracking, reimbursement requests, and compliance documentation. Assist in monitoring cash flow, investments, and district financial records. Assist with maintaining accurate accounting and financial management systems. Assist the School Business Official with bond, debt service, and levy documentation. Assist with negotiations preparation, costing, and financial analysis. Board and Administrative Support Assist with preparing Board agendas, financial reports, and supporting documentation. Assist with maintaining official records, legal notices, and election-related documentation. Assist administrators and staff with purchasing procedures, budget questions, and financial processes. Assist with communicating financial information to district stakeholders as directed. Compliance and Operations Assist the School Business Official in ensuring compliance with Iowa Department of Education requirements, Iowa Code, federal regulations, and district policies. Assist with internal controls, inventory procedures, and financial safeguards. Assist with purchasing and bidding procedures in compliance with district policy and law. Support employee onboarding and benefit-related processes as assigned. Assist with insurance documentation and claims coordination. Regularly collaborate with district administrators and office staff to support district operations. Professional Responsibilities Participate in professional development related to Iowa school finance and business management. Develop working knowledge of Iowa school finance laws, budgeting, accounting, and reporting systems. Perform other duties as assigned by the School Business Official or Superintendent. Qualifications Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred. Experience in accounting, finance, payroll, human resources, or business operations preferred. School district experience preferred but not required. Licenses and Certifications Ability to obtain Iowa School Business Official authorization/licensure. Skills and Abilities Strong organizational and analytical skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to learn Iowa school finance and accounting systems. Proficiency with spreadsheets, accounting software, and office technology. Ability to work collaboratively with administrators, staff, and community members. Terms of Employment Full-time, 12-month administrative position. Salary and benefits determined by the Board of Education. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
