Position Summary:
Make a lasting impact both in and out of the pool by helping young swimmers build confidence, strengthen skills, and achieve their goals in a positive team environment. In accordance with the Christian principles of the YMCA, the Assistant Swim Coach helps coordinate and support the operation of the swim team program. This role leads organized, engaging, and challenging practices that promote skill development, sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth while ensuring the safety and well-being of every swimmer. The Assistant Swim Coach plays an important role in creating a fun, encouraging, and competitive experience for youth athletes while embodying the YMCA Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Head Coach in developing and maintaining a competitive and inclusive youth swim program.
  • Lead and supervise organized swim practices and training sessions.
  • Provide individualized coaching and instruction tailored to swimmers' skill levels and abilities.
  • Teach and model proper techniques related to workouts, warm-ups, racing starts, shallow water entries, and swim mechanics.
  • Encourage skill progression, confidence, teamwork, and sportsmanship among swimmers.
  • Maintain direct supervision of swimmers at all times and ensure a safe pool environment.
  • Remain alert to potential hazards in and around the pool deck, practice areas, and swim meets.
  • Effectively communicate safety expectations and educate swimmers on risk awareness in the sport.
  • Ensure fair and positive practice and meet experiences for athletes of all experience levels.
  • Assist in implementing a comprehensive aquatics program that includes instruction, fitness, and competitive swimming opportunities.
  • Promote YMCA aquatics programs and help recruit swimmers to support continued team growth.
  • Support swim meets, special events, team celebrations, and recognition opportunities for team and individual accomplishments.
  • Communicate regularly with swimmers and families regarding practices, schedules, and swim meet information.
  • Present a professional and positive image through appearance, attitude, and interactions with swimmers and families.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Swim Coach and/or Aquatics Director.
Team Responsibilities:
  • Maintain the self-esteem and confidence of all swimmers.
  • Provide constructive feedback and ideas to the Head Coach regarding program improvements and participant experiences.
  • Arrive on time for scheduled practices, swim meets, meetings, and events.
  • Communicate appropriately regarding absences or schedule changes.
  • Support a positive, team-oriented culture within the aquatics department.
Qualifications Qualifications:
  • Successful experience as a Swim Team Coach preferred.
  • Knowledge of competitive swimming techniques, coaching strategies, and league eligibility requirements, including YMCA League and USA Swimming guidelines.
  • Current CPR/AED and Standard First Aid certifications required.
  • Safety Training for Swim Coaches certification required.
  • Lifeguard certification preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire youth athletes in a positive and encouraging manner.
  • Personal commitment to physical fitness and healthy living.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors, staff, swimmers, families, and community members.
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable attendance and work in a constant state of alertness.
Child Abuse Prevention Responsibilities:
Employees and volunteers who directly supervise children and teens will:
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children and teens.
  • Attend required abuse risk management training annually.
  • Follow procedures for managing high-risk activities and supervising children and teens.
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
