JOB SUMMARY
The Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center, Division of Audiology, is seeking a motivated employee to work in our hearing aid lab. The position involves patient care helping both adults and children troubleshoot hearing devices. The position also involves answering patient phone calls, tracking devices that come through the clinic, shipping / receiving devices, earmolds, and cochlear implant processors for the department. The applicant will work closely with other lab technicians and audiologists. Lastly, the applicant may be crossed trained to check in patients and collect patient payments. Successful lab technicians are friendly, detail oriented, able to prioritize in a fast-paced environment, and work well with others. Please note that traveling to satellite clinics is a must. . Our multidisciplinary team includes:
Audiologists Speech-Language Pathologists ENT (Otolaryngology) Specialists Rehabilitation Therapists We deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care using the latest hearing aid technology, cochlear implants, and communication therapies. Audiology Technician Role Overview As an Audiology Technician, you will support the Hearing Aid Lab and clinic operations, playing a critical role in patient care, device management, and clinical workflow. This position blends direct patient interaction, technical troubleshooting, and administrative coordination, making it an ideal stepping stone for careers in audiology or speech-language pathology. What You'll Do Provide hands-on support to patients with hearing aids, assistive listening devices, and Bluetooth connectivity Assist with same-day clinic visits, ensuring efficient and high-quality patient care Manage inventory, ordering, shipping, and tracking of hearing devices and supplies Coordinate with audiologists and lab staff to ensure clinic readiness Maintain accurate records in electronic systems such as TIMS Travel to satellite clinics as needed to support patient care delivery Why This Role Is Great for You Perfect for recent graduates in Audiology, Speech-Language Pathology, or Communication Sciences Gain exposure to cochlear implants, hearing aids, and assistive technology Work in a collaborative team of 20-25 providers Build critical skills in patient care, clinical operations, and healthcare technology Enjoy a predictable Monday-Friday schedule with no weekends Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Audiology, Speech-Language Pathology, or related field preferred 3+ years of customer service or patient-facing experience Experience working with pediatric or special needs populations preferred Strong communication, organization, and multitasking skills Detail-oriented with a positive, team-first attitude
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist and counsel same day clinic patients independently with hearing aid repairs, supplies, earmold pick up and accessory Bluetooth pairing.
  • Document and bill for patient care services.
  • Schedule same day clinic patients for hearing aid cleanings, supplies, and repairs, and earmold pick up.
  • Respond timely to patient messages/calls and provider clinical messages.
  • Complete quality check of invoices with our negotiated prices and purchase order numbers.
  • Ship items back to manufacturer for repairs, remakes, or refunds via USPS, UPS, or FedEx.
  • Order hearing aids, accessories, and earmolds per Track aid or custom hearing aid forms.
TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES
  • Patient Documentation and Billing (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery proficiency in documentation practices.
Documents in the appropriate templates and utilizes only approved abbreviations within patient documentation. Meets institutional standards for quality and timeliness of documentation and billing. May orient new staff to departmental and VUMC documentation standards. Will complete accurate chart audits of co-workers' documentation.
  • Customer Service (Intermediate): Keeps management informed on all aspects of one or more projects.
Takes personal responsibility to ensure external and internal customer satisfaction is met despite pressures and/or significant obstacles. Discusses options with customer for alternative ways to meet expectations cost-effectively and efficiently. Commands respect and confidence from customers, and identifies, influences, and creates business opportunities. Deals with unexpected customer demands smoothly and without conflict.
  • Audiology Patient Education (Intermediate): Communicates functional impact of assessment findings, treatment interventions, diagnosis, and disease process.
Adapts communication to the level of understanding of the patient. Determines comprehension and need for repetition and/or revision of counseling methods. Promotes public awareness and prevention of communicative and related disorders through local, and regional presentations to patient groups (e.g. American Tinnitus Association, Vestibular Disorders Association etc). Generates measurable improvement in understanding and quality of life of patients and their families.
  • Hearing Aid Maintenance (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate the ability to maintain devices, accessories, or systems in practical applications of moderate difficulty. Assures that parts inventory is sufficient.
  • Quality Assurance (Novice): Has provided continuous analysis and evaluation of assignment work processes, constantly striving for improvement in the way tasks and activities are accomplished by questioning their value to the process and contributing creative solutions.
