Barn Hand (Part-Time) Middleburg Humane Foundation | Marshall, Virginia Middleburg Humane Foundation (MHF) is a private, nonprofit animal welfare organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals in need while promoting animal welfare through community outreach and humane education. Located on a beautiful 23-acre farm in Marshall, Virginia, MHF provides a safe haven for animals of all kinds—from dogs and cats to horses, livestock, and small companion animals. Our unique facility includes equine and livestock barns, expansive pastures, an on-site veterinary clinic, and adoption facilities, allowing us to provide exceptional care to animals large and small. We are seeking a dependable, hardworking, and animal-savvy Barn Hand to join our Equine and Livestock team. This position plays an essential role in the daily care and well-being of the domestic livestock and equines in our adoption program. Position Summary The Barn Hand is responsible for the daily care, handling, and husbandry of horses and a variety of farm animals in MHF's care. This includes feeding, grooming, cleaning, and maintaining safe, sanitary living spaces, as well as assisting with the rehabilitation and adoption readiness of our animals. This role is ideal for someone who is comfortable working with a wide range of species and enjoys hands-on animal care in a fast-paced rescue environment. Primary Responsibilities Provide daily care for horses, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, ducks, and occasionally cattle Feed, water, groom, and monitor animals for health or behavioral concerns Clean stalls, paddocks, coops, and other animal housing areas to maintain a safe and sanitary environment Handle horses of varying ages, training levels, and temperaments; help prepare them for adoption Work patiently with shy, under-socialized, or rehabilitating horses Hold horses and livestock for veterinary and farrier appointments Assist with basic training, handling, and socialization to improve adoptability Maintain cleanliness and organization of the barn, feed rooms, and tack areas Sort donated items and assist with tack sales and inventory organization Support general farm maintenance projects, including mowing, fence repair, and facility upkeep Supervise and work alongside volunteers assisting with barn and farm tasks Safely operate farm equipment as needed; experience hauling with a truck and trailer is highly desirable Qualifications Prior experience working with horses and/or domestic livestock required Basic knowledge of equine and livestock husbandry strongly preferred Comfortable handling a variety of animal species, including those that may be fearful or inexperienced Ability to recognize signs of illness, injury, or behavioral changes Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail Ability to work independently and as part of a team Comfortable supervising volunteers and providing direction Experience driving a truck and trailer is a plus Must be able to perform physically demanding work, including lifting feed, mucking stalls, and working outdoors in all weather conditions
