  • Full-time West Texas Wildlife Preserve (WTWP) is a 240-acre ranch-style facility located in Merkel, TX, dedicated to the conservation and genetic diversity of over 75 species through collaboration with zoological institutions.
As a new and growing preserve with a strong vision for the future, WTWP is led by a highly experienced management team passionate about animal care, education, and conservation. We are seeking a passionate, dedicated Bird Keeper to join our team and contribute to the care and welfare of a diverse collection of avian species. Responsibilities Provide daily husbandry, feeding, and care for assigned bird species. Maintain clean, safe, and enriched enclosures through regular cleaning, inspection, and maintenance. Prepare and distribute appropriate diets according to established nutrition guidelines. Observe animal behavior, appetite, and condition; report any abnormalities promptly. Maintain accurate daily records, including feeding logs, health notes, and behavioral observations. Assist veterinary and management staff with treatments, exams, and medication administration. Participate in and support behavioral training, breeding, and environmental enrichment programs. Actively implement and uphold facility policies, procedures, and safety protocols. Support collaborative efforts in research, education, and conservation initiatives. Maintain a professional and positive attitude while communicating and collaborating with team members. Willingness to be trained in other animal areas as needed and work with a wide variety of species. Provide occasional assistance with educational programs and tours when required. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required; degree in Biology, Zoology, Wildlife Management, or related field preferred. Minimum of one year of animal husbandry experience, preferably with avian species in a zoo or wildlife setting. Demonstrated reliability, attention to detail, and consistent high-quality work performance. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Valid driver's license with a good driving record. Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts as needed. Physical and Environmental Requirements Must be in good health and capable of performing strenuous physical labor. Ability to stand for long periods, climb, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs. Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and around various animal species. Must adhere to all safety and biosecurity protocols to ensure the well-being of both animals and staff.
