Job Description

Plant Breeding Technician Pay Rate:
$23.00/hour Contract 7 months plus
Responsibilities:
Breeding Technician Will independently coordinate, set up and execute breeding nursery and screening activities as defined by the Breeder for a specific area and/or crops of expertise. Within soybean breeding team, assist the Agronomy Manager with planning, monitoring, and providing input related to the operational breeding process to ensure long-term profitability and success of the breeding program. During peak season, longer hours may be required. Education Associate or bachelor's degree in biology, botany, crop science, horticulture, or related field. Students making progress toward an associate or bachelor's degree will be considered.
  • Additional plant breeding courses are highly desirable.
  • Master's or PhD are not desired as this is an entry-level/mid-level role. Experience Background or experience in biology, botany, crop science, horticulture or related field.
  • Working in hot, cold, wet, humid and dusty conditions in the greenhouse and the field. Knowledge/Skills Working knowledge of horticultural practices and procedures
  • Basic knowledge of plant sciences and genetics
  • Understanding of agricultural practices General Computer Skills
  • Organized and competent with file and data management
  • Competent using Microsoft Office software
  • Working knowledge of information system, data management systems, databases, and spreadsheets. Language and Other skills Excellent written and oral communication in English.
  • Valid Private Applicators Certificate preferred, or willingness to attain certification. Valid driver's license required. Competencies

  • Ability to work independently and be flexible to quickly changing activities.
  • Pro-active in identifying problems or opportunities associated with assigned tasks.

  • Working knowledge of horticultural practices and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of plant sciences and genetics.
  • Availability for weekend work hour and overtime as needed, often on very short notice.
  • Must be able to work around bees and other insects
  • Ability to bend, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds.
Comments/Special Instructions Most work will be performed on-site, with possible off-site work. Transportation will be provided from office to field. Enrolled college students making progress toward an agriculture or horticulture degree welcome to apply. Earlier end date can be negotiated for college students.
