Job Description

Position Purpose In support of the Town of Great Barrington's mission to serve the community with integrity, accountability, and excellence in public service, the Buildings and Grounds Laborer plays a critical role in maintaining safe, reliable, and resilient public infrastructure. This position is responsible for performing a wide range of skilled and manual tasks related to the maintenance and repair of Town facilities. The Laborer directly contributes to sustaining the Town's day-to-day operations, protecting public safety, and community well-being by ensuring Town buildings, parks, and all other public spaces are cared for and accessible to Town staff, residents, and visitors. Working as part of the Buildings and Grounds Division, this role requires reliability, teamwork, and a strong commitment to service. The work performed has a visible and lasting impact on residents, businesses, and visitors, and supports the Town's goal of maintaining accessible, safe, and well-maintained public spaces for all.
Supervision Reports to:
Highway/Facilities Superintendent, Working Foreman, and/or
DPW Superintendent Supervises:
No direct supervisory responsibilities Works independently or as part of a crew to complete assigned tasks. Essential Duties and Responsibilities (The functions or duties listed below are intended as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.) Performs manual labor in connection with maintenance of Town buildings, public lands, and other facilities. Duties include, but are not limited to: custodial maintenance, sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, collecting trash, and seasonal labor such as snow removal, groundskeeping, mowing, carpentry, painting, light plumbing and electrical work, and equipment maintenance. Responds to building alarm calls as necessary. Notifies the Building & Grounds Superintendent of any significant maintenance concerns from the staff within the public buildings. Assist other divisions of the DPW as coordinated by the Buildings & Grounds Superintendent. Operates trucks for hauling, loading, and transporting materials. Performs routine maintenance checks on vehicles and equipment; reports needed repairs. Maintains work areas in a safe, clean, and orderly condition. Participates in snow and ice removal, including plowing, sanding, and salting. Responds to emergency situations such as storms, flooding, or road hazards. Performs other related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver's License Knowledge of safe operation of trucks, equipment, and tools. Ability to perform heavy manual labor under varying weather conditions. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, work cooperatively, and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors. Preferred Qualification Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class 2A Hoisting license Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Good communication and teamwork abilities. Ability to work in shifts and in all weather conditions. Commitment to environmental stewardship and compliance. Work Environment and Phyiscal Requirements Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, and traffic hazards. Operates a variety of motor vehicles, and power tools. Interacts with the public on occasion, requiring courtesy and professionalism.
