General Manager - Manufacturing Business Unit Position Summary The General Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a 40-person manufacturing business unit. This role oversees people, production activities, task execution, and workflow coordination. The General Manager ensures that team members are properly assigned, supported, and held accountable while coordinating activities across departments to meet business objectives. This position reports directly to the Vice President. Key Responsibilities Leadership and People Management Lead, manage, and support a team of approximately 40 employees within the manufacturing business unit. Assign responsibilities, clarify priorities, and ensure team members understand expectations. Monitor employee performance and provide coaching, feedback, and accountability. Support hiring, onboarding, training, development, and performance management activities. Foster a positive, productive, and safety-focused work environment. Address employee issues, conflicts, and performance concerns in a timely and professional manner. Operations and Task Coordination Oversee daily manufacturing activities to ensure work is completed efficiently, accurately, and on schedule. Coordinate people, equipment, materials, and workflows to meet production goals. Prioritize tasks and adjust resources as needed to respond to changing business needs. Work with supervisors, leads, and team members to identify and remove obstacles to productivity. Ensure clear communication between departments, shifts, and leadership. Production, Quality, and Performance Monitor production output, quality standards, efficiency, and on-time completion. Help establish and track key performance indicators for the business unit. Identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce waste, increase throughput, and improve reliability. Ensure work is performed according to company procedures, customer requirements, and quality standards. Partner with quality, engineering, maintenance, supply chain, and other functions as needed. Safety and Compliance Promote and enforce safe work practices throughout the business unit. Ensure employees follow company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Support safety training, incident prevention, and corrective action efforts. Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant manufacturing environment. Communication and Reporting Report regularly to the Vice President on business unit performance, staffing, issues, risks, and improvement opportunities. Communicate priorities, goals, and expectations clearly to the team. Escalate operational concerns, resource needs, or personnel matters as appropriate. Participate in leadership meetings and contribute to business planning and operational strategy. Qualifications Prior leadership experience in a manufacturing, production, operations, or industrial environment. Experience managing teams, assigning work, coordinating activities, and holding employees accountable. Strong understanding of manufacturing operations, workflow management, safety, quality, and productivity. Ability to lead a team of 40+ employees in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to prioritize competing demands and make sound operational decisions. Comfortable working with leadership, supervisors, production employees, and cross-functional teams. Proficiency with basic business systems, reporting tools, and Microsoft Office or similar software. Preferred Qualifications 5+ years of manufacturing or operations leadership experience. Experience managing supervisors, team leads, or multi-functional production teams. Familiarity with lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, 5S, ISO, or other quality systems. Experience with budgeting, staffing plans, production metrics, and operational reporting. Ability to spend time on the production floor as needed. May require standing, walking, bending, or lifting consistent with the needs of the operation. Must be able to follow required safety procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, and move throughout the manufacturing floor for extended periods. Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull materials, tools, or equipment up to 25-50 pounds, depending on business needs. Ability to climb stairs, access production areas, and move safely around machinery and equipment. Ability to sit, use a computer, and perform administrative work for portions of the workday. Ability to communicate clearly in person, by phone, and through written communication. Ability to see, hear, and respond to workplace conditions, instructions, alarms, and safety signals. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toed shoes, or other equipment as required. Ability to work in a manufacturing environment that may include noise, temperature changes, dust, moving equipment, and other standard production-floor conditions. Ability to work extended hours or adjust schedule as needed to support production, staffing, or operational requirements.
