Must be fluent in English Overview of the Program Simsbury-ABC is part of a national organization and we are a college preparatory program for young men of color from underserved communities. We competitively select young men graduating middle school across the country, and we provide them room, board and supervision at the Simsbury ABC House located on Hopmeadow street, and while they attend Simsbury High School. Our mission, aligned with the National ABC organization, is to increase the number of college educated adults of color who then go on to make a positive impact in the communities. In our 52+ years, we have graduated over 87 students, and over 95% of those have gone to successfully complete college in four years. The students in the Simsbury ABC Program are competitively selected from around the United States and are typically high-performing and well-behaved. There are usually 7-10 male students residing in the program. Typical Applicant While individual applicants are welcome, this role is typically fulfilled by a husband/wife couple due to the demands of the position. The RDs are passionate about the ABC mission and are willing to serve on a part-time basis for free room & board and nominal compensation. Reporting The Resident Directors report to the Board President. The RDs sign a contract each year at the discretion of the Board of Directors. While not a requirement, it is expected that the RDs who perform well will remain with the program for at least 3 years. The Board President will review performance of and with RDs at least annually.
Background check:
The RDs must be legally employable in Connecticut and must pass a background check for motor vehicle moving violations, criminal activity and sexual predation or harassment.
Outside employment:
The RDs are encouraged to have employment in addition to the RD role, allowing one of the RDs to fulfill the requirements of the position (being physically present in the house) prior to 7:30am and after 5:00pm during school days. Some flexibility will be required. Schedule Students are in residence from the end of August to middle of June each year, excluding holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, winter break, and spring break. Their regular school hours are from 7:30 am to 2:10 pm, and they often participate in extracurricular activities until later in the evening. On weekends, students generally stay at the residence, except for one weekend per month when they spend Friday after school until dinner on Sunday with their host families. Compensation and benefits An adjoining one-bedroom apartment with kitchen, year-round utilities (covering heat, electricity, and internet) is provided at no cost. The program assumes all normal costs associated with the maintenance of the ABC House and its systems, including plumbing, electrical work, and appliances. If the Resident Directors makes a commitment for the upcoming year's program, he/she will have use of the ABC House with utilities (heat, electricity, internet, water and TV content) paid for the summer as well. The program retains a chef, who cooks 5 days a week during the school year. The RDs are expected to take dinner meals with the students & other resident staff. The meals are provided by the program's chefs, who ensure that the pantry is well-supplied. Additionally, laundry facilities are accessible at the ABC house. A modest stipend is disbursed over the ten-month period commencing in September each year, with deductions for taxes, social security, and Medicare made before payment. It's important to note that no additional benefits are offered beyond these provisions. Insurance The ABC program carries insurance on the ABC House protecting it against loss. However, there is minimal coverage on the contents of the House.
