Job Description

The Resource Management Officer II (RMO II) works in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, for the Department of Environment and Climate Change, enforcing environmental laws and managing public land use in the South Slave Region. The role involves conducting hundreds of inspections and investigations annually (with a ~$250K budget) to ensure compliance with various land, water, and resource regulations. The RMO II enforces multiple territorial acts and policies related to land use, mining, water use, and environmental protection. They work closely with government agencies, Indigenous governments, industry, and the public. The role is critical in preventing environmental damage in a sensitive region and requires independent decision-making, especially in enforcement and legal proceedings.
Key responsibilities but limited too:
Inspecting land and resource activities to ensure legal compliance Investigating violations and unauthorized activities Enforcing regulations through warnings, orders, or permit suspensions Leading serious investigations, collecting evidence, and pursuing prosecution when necessary Coordinating with other agencies and recommending enforcement actions Preparing reports, legal documents, and court briefs
Key Qualifications:
completion of a 2-year Diploma in a Natural Resources Program as well as 2 years of related resource management experience, including experience in safety, firearms and evidence collection and presentation. A valid class 5 Drivers license able to produce a medical clearance to confirm fitness to perform physical requirements of the position. A Boating License and a Firearms Acquisition Certificate are required within 6 months of hire.
