Exempt Position Summary:
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) serves as the senior executive of the Ward Lumber Worker Cooperative (WLWC). The CEO's primary responsibility is to be fully engaged with the board and management team to plan, direct, coordinate, and control the financial, operating, and human resources of the cooperative, following WLWC policies; to provide effective and satisfactory leadership, benefits and services to participating members, while meeting financial and operational goals and objectives. CEO shall possess significant organizational skills, to manage and direct the organization. The CEO is accountable to the WLWC Board of Directors.

Foster an environment that promotes member education and engagement. Provide and encourage business and financial education. Strive to build a culture of active and conscientious cooperative owners and employees. Help facilitate and encourage committee participation. Grow the bottom line. Increase sales, maintain our margin, while decreasing shrink. Have plans and goals to achieve this, and communicate our priorities to the company. Improve employee retention and development. Support and elevate our staff with enhanced training, wages, and benefits. Build our team's capacity through cross-training and inter-store collaboration. Bench plan proactively throughout our team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Board Relations and Planning In concert with the Board of Directors, establishes an appropriate plan to implement Board-defined goals and policies and evaluate the achievements of annual and long-term growth, service, and financial objectives consistent with the mission of WLWC. Meets with the Board and committees as required. Formulates overall business objectives, policies, strategic plans, and annual operations plan for WLWC and designs long-term strategic plans in concert with the Board of Directors' directives, the company's mission, and vision, incorporating historical and projected operational and business development opportunities. Guides the development and implementation of plans and budgets that provide for the timely availability and utilization of physical, financial, and human resources to achieve specified goals. Ensures the Board is fully informed on emerging trends and issues, fostering a transparent, collaborative relationship for timely decision-making through clear, analytical reports. Monitoring business performance and compliance with Board policies and limits defined by the Board. Set goals & strategies. Asset liability & risk management. Manage operations & resources of the company along with how capital is allocated Carries out other such general duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the Board of Directors as necessary. Management of Staff and Facilities Provides leadership in the administration of the business affairs and operations of WLWC Oversees and provides guidance to the General Managers as well as the finance, purchasing, marketing, and Pro Sales departments. Communicates and enforces Board-approved policies to senior management and ensures effective organization-wide dissemination. Recommends potential policies to the Board. Monitors and evaluates the performance of senior staff and, as appropriate, provides guidance to assist in the development or otherwise ensures that senior management receives appropriate education and training. Ensures WLWC maintains a safe working environment for all team members to minimize accidents and related costs. Ensures that all the Ward Lumber Worker Cooperative's legal, tax, and other financial obligations are met and takes necessary action to secure continued stability. Member and External relationships Acts directly or through appropriate staff to ensure the existence of proper liaisons to the WLWC membership, business partners, public officials, government agencies, legislative bodies, committees, and the news media. Provides opportunities for and facilitates participation in cooperative education. Develops and maintains an effective and harmonious relationship with the membership. Is actively engaged in leading and or facilitating team member recruitment and retention Directs the development of products and services necessary for the growth and prosperity of the WLWC membership. Attends WLWC events as their schedule allows. Is actively engaged in customer relations. Executive-level management skills are required. Operations Assigns duties and responsibilities to functional areas and executive staff, ensuring that responsibilities are delegated effectively throughout the organization. Oversees and directs daily operations and strategic planning for all WLWC profit centers, driving efficiency, profitability, and process improvements. Assures all plans are consistent with the mission, vision, and values of the company to meet its financial goals. Technical Knowledge & Skills Advanced business skills, including strong communication, analytical, computer, and financial proficiency, typically gained through an Associate's or Bachelor's degree. Lumber & building materials experience preferred. Possesses the ability to communicate, mentor, and motivate effectively as a leader. Possesses conflict resolution skills. Networking and Association Relationships Builds partnerships between cooperatives, businesses, government, and the public to support consumer-oriented, people-centered organizations. Networks with appropriate organizations as necessary to help further the goals and objectives of the WLWC. Stay abreast of industry trends relating to the Building Supplies Industry.
Performance Measurement:
The performance of the CEO will be evaluated by the Board based on the criteria outlined in the job description.
Environment/Working Conditions:
Travel within and outside of New York is required with occasional overnight stays possible. The majority of time spent must be on site, in both stores.
