Job Description
The position demands strong leadership, management, organizational, communication, and professional skills. It involves interacting and consulting with numerous different constituencies: the student leadership, other student participants in the Company's operations, the Board of Directors (with both student and alumni/professional members) ("the Board"), personnel of the Friends of the Stanford Daily Foundation ("the Friends Foundation"), other employees, professional advisors, vendors and creditors, customers and debtors, alumni and supporters, and the administration of Leland Stanford Junior University (the "University"). Successful relationships with all those constituencies are essential to the position. The position reports both to the President/Chief Executive Officer (Editor-in-Chief) and the Board of Directors (especially the Chair and the Director in the legal slot on the Board), and it works closely with the Board of Directors and staff of the Friends of the Stanford Daily Foundation. The position also serves as liaison to the University administration on certain matters. The details of the position's responsibilities are outlined below.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO
• Management and oversight of the Company's financial and non-editorial affairs, including o Governmental filings (tax returns, statements of officers, etc.). o Contract negotiation, documentation, recordkeeping, and compliance. o Keeping a calendar of important organizational deadlines and providing reminders to relevant personnel. o Management of finances, accounts, investments, real estate, property, and other assets, including: ▪ Attention to the Company's day-to-day financial activities throughout the fiscal year. ▪ Attention to accounts receivable, accounts payable, and cash flow. o Setting (in consultation with all relevant constituencies), administering, and meeting operating and capital budgets, including revenue and profitability targets. o Working with the controller to prepare monthly and quarterly financial reports for the Company's Board of Directors and with auditors for annual financial reports. o Other interactions with accountants, auditors, insurance brokers, and lawyers as needed from time to time. o Intellectual property licensing (in conjunction with EIC). o Participation in dispute-related activities in consultation with EIC, Board, and legal counsel. • University and Associated Students of Stanford University ("ASSU") relations: o Timely meeting all formal notifications to the University and other obligations under the lease and the memorandum of understanding with the University; o Attendance at required meetings with the University and ASSU. • Staff, Board, and Friends of the Stanford Daily Foundation relationship management: o Recruiting, hiring, training, managing, and mentoring the Company's business staff; o Scheduling, distribution of agendas, recording and maintaining minutes, of, and attendance at Daily Board and Friends Foundation Board meetings; o Attendance at and active participation in weekly meetings with relevant teams at The Daily including but not limited to the advertising sales team, editorial teams, tech team, etc.; o Oversight of human resources policies and operations. • Fundraising o Timely and effective submission of proposals or requests for grants and other financial support, including but not limited to support from ASSU and the University. o Overseeing the Company's other fundraising activities, including interactions with students, fundraising professionals, the Daily Board, the Friends Foundation Board, the Friends Foundation Advisory Board, alumni, and other actual or potential donors/grantors. This further includes:
▪ Planning and execution of, and local attendance at, fund raising events; ▪ Retaining (in participation with others) and oversight of student assistants and fund-raising professionals; ▪ Attention to Friends Foundation relationships; ▪ Tracking and reporting fundraising performance. • Strategy o Creating business development strategies and projects to improve the Company's financial performance, including market research, creation of a business plan, and new business opportunity strategies; o Evaluating the Company's structures, procedures, practices, personnel roles, job descriptions (including the job description of this position), and other operational factors and consulting with the student leadership and board of directors regarding suggestions for improvement; o Collaboration with the Board of Directors to establish Board and Student leadership manuals and orientations. • General o Behaving in a manner consistent with the moral and ethical character of the Company, its employees, and its clients. o Performing such other tasks as the Company may require.
