Job Description

Director of Recovery 500 Robert Jemison Rd, Birmingham, AL 35209 Hybrid work From $80,000 a year - Full-time From $80,000 a year - Full-time Position Summary The Director of Recovery is responsible for leading and managing the strategic and operational functions of the recovery department, ensuring compliance with regulations, and maintaining ethical standards. This role ensures safe, high-quality, and timely recovery of tissue. This role oversees staffing, training, logistics and interdepartmental collaboration to support the mission of restoring sight through ocular donation. The Director plays an important role in operational analysis, process improvement, and supporting strategic initiatives. Responsibilities
  • Oversee the daily operations of the Recovery department, ensuring efficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure timely and efficient donor tissue recovery and documentation.
  • Supervise and mentor recovery staff including trainers and supervisors, encouraging a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with hospitals, funeral homes, and medical examiners/coroners/justices of the peace to coordinate recovery logistics and ensure timely recoveries.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies and procedures to standardize recovery processes.
  • Maintain compliance with FDA, EBAA, and internal quality standards.
  • Manage supply inventory, equipment maintenance, and logistics to ensure uninterrupted operations.
  • Train and mentor staff in aseptic recovery techniques, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Donor Service Center, Partner Relations, and other departments to ensure effective communication and coordinated case management.
  • Represent the organization at conferences and professional meetings as needed.
  • Compile and analyze departmental statistics to identify trends, improve performance, and support continuous quality improvement.
  • Maintain a 24/7 operational schedule with adequate coverage. Expectations
  • Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for a functional area or service line.
  • Translate organizational goals into actionable plans and measurable outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance, quality assurance, and risk management within assigned areas.
  • Lead, coach, and evaluate managers and tead leads, encouraging leadership development.
  • Collaborate with peers and leadership to ensure department alignment with organizational strategy.
  • Manage budgets and resources effectively, ensuring efficiency and fiscal responsibility.
  • Promote innovation, process improvement, and accountability across tams.
  • Represent the department with professionalism in internal and external meetings.
  • Communicate complex information clearly and diplomatically across all levels.
  • Model inclusive, values-based leadership and uphold the organization's mission and ethics.
  • Anticipate challenges and guide teams through change with steadiness and transparency. Qualifications
  • Minimum of eight years of progressively responsible management experience and a bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.
  • Demonstrated success leading teams, managing budgets, and achieving operational goals.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire accountability and collaboration.
  • Proven experience translating strategy into actionable plans and measurable results.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to represent the organization professionally.
  • Proficiency in office software, data systems, and other departmental software.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and guide teams through organizational change.
  • Must maintain the highest level of confidentiality and ensure compliance with all privacy, regulatory, and ethical standards throughout areas of responsibility.
  • Position may require evening, weekend, or holiday work based on organizational needs.
  • Valid driver's license and proof of insurance. Physical Demands
  • Must be able to perform duties that require standing, walking, bending, lifting, and reaching.
  • Ability to push / pull up to 350 lbs.
  • Requires manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and visual acuity to perform detailed tasks and operate equipment.
  • Must be able to work in varied environments such as hospitals, surgical suites, laboratories, or other field settings.
  • Requires ability to sit or stand for extended periods and to drive for work-related travel.
  • Must be able to use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Ability to respond to job-related demands during irregular hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as assigned.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in person, by phone, and through digital platforms.
