If you know the Chicago ramps cold, you've spent years watching last free days, chassis pools, and cutoffs, and you're ready to be the person other dispatchers turn to — this is built for you. This isn't a seat where you'll be learning the basics. You'll step in with the experience to spot problems before they cost us money, run the day with urgency, and help shape how the department operates as we grow. What you'll do Run daily rail and drayage dispatch for company drivers, owner-operators, and partner carriers moving import and export containers across UP, BNSF, CN, CSX, NS, CPKC, and other local ramps. That means managing the full lifecycle of every container on the board — pending arrivals, available pickups, pre-pulls, drops at customer, empty returns, and terminations — while staying ahead of cutoffs, last free days, per diem, detention, and chassis charges. Beyond the board, you'll be the connective tissue between drivers, customers, steamship lines, rail terminals, and our warehouse. You'll keep drivers communicating clean status updates, give customers proactive visibility, and resolve the daily fires — bad pickup numbers, missing bookings, rail holds, customs holds, no-chassis situations, failed appointments — before they become escalations. You'll look for street turns and chassis reuse wherever the lanes allow. You'll keep our TMS clean: accurate notes on every load, all documents uploaded (delivery orders, interchange receipts, PODs, gate receipts, BOLs, chassis paperwork), and exceptions clearly documented. We're also moving from manual dispatch boards to digital workflows, and we want your input on what that should look like. Leadership As a senior on the team, you'll help prioritize the daily workload, coach less experienced dispatchers, and bring structure and accountability to how the rail desk operates. You'll escalate real risk — operational, customer, driver, financial — to management quickly, and you'll set the standard for urgency, accuracy, and professionalism. What we need from you 3-5+ years of rail, intermodal, or drayage dispatch experience Strong working knowledge of Chicago rail ramps and terminal procedures Solid grasp of import/export container workflows, chassis ops, empty returns, and rail appointments Comfort working across a TMS, email, spreadsheets, rail websites, and customer portals Clear written and verbal communication — firm with drivers, professional with customers The judgment to know when something doesn't look right, and the follow-through to fix it Nice to have Experience dispatching specifically in Chicago intermodal, PCS or similar TMS experience, exposure to bonded freight, customs holds, or CFS operations, and any history training junior dispatchers or improving dispatch processes.
