This position requires the ability to remain calm under pressure, gather accurate information, and dispatch appropriate emergency personnel and resources quickly and efficiently. Dispatchers serve as the vital link between the community and first responders, ensuring public safety through clear communication and rapid decision-making. Key Responsibilities Answer and process incoming emergency (911) and non-emergency calls. Determine the nature, location, and priority of emergencies and provide appropriate assistance. Dispatch police, fire, and other emergency units as needed. Maintain continuous contact with responding units, relaying information, instructions, and updates. Monitor and operate multi-channel radio, computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems, and other communication equipment. Accurately document all calls, actions, and responses in the CAD system. Provide pre-arrival instructions when appropriate (e.g., safety instructions for callers). Perform records checks (NCIC, state, and local databases) and relay information to officers. Remain calm and professional in high-stress, life-threatening, or emotionally charged situations. Follow department policies, procedures, and confidentiality standards. Assist with administrative tasks, data entry, and reporting as needed. Qualifications High school diploma or GED (required). Valid Oklahoma Driver's License and reliable transportation to work (required). Proficient typing skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment. Knowledge of geography, streets, and jurisdictions within the service area (or ability to quickly learn). Familiarity with computer systems. Must successfully pass background check, drug screening, and any required certifications. Availability to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Skills & Competencies Active listening and strong attention to detail. Emotional resilience and stress tolerance. Working Conditions Work is performed in a secure communications center environment. Long periods of sitting and wearing a headset. Exposure to high-stress situations and disturbing information. Rotating shifts, including overtime when needed.
