Full-Time Help Lead Our Community Through Disaster Preparedness, Response, and Recovery The New Hanover Disaster Coalition (NHDC) is seeking a dynamic, relationship-driven leader to serve as its next Director. This unique role offers the opportunity to coordinate disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts across New Hanover County while building partnerships that strengthen community resilience before, during, and after disasters. The NHDC brings together government agencies, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, businesses, and community partners with a shared mission: connecting residents with resources that aid in disaster readiness, response, and recovery. About the Role The Director serves as the primary facilitator, coordinator, and convener of the Coalition's activities, working closely with community partners, emergency management leaders, volunteers, and service organizations. During disaster events, the Director plays a critical role in coordinating recovery efforts, supporting survivors, and ensuring resources are effectively aligned to meet community needs. This position operates remotely from the Wilmington area but requires active engagement throughout the community and participation in emergency response operations when activated. Key Responsibilities Lead and coordinate coalition response and recovery efforts following significant disasters. Serve as liaison with local Emergency Operations Centers and emergency management partners. Facilitate the activities of the New Hanover Disaster Coalition and Long-Term Recovery Group (LTRG). Build and maintain collaborative relationships across nonprofit, government, faith-based, and business sectors. Support the Coalition Advisory Board and five working committees. Coordinate disaster preparedness initiatives, community outreach, and public education efforts. Develop strategic partnerships that enhance disaster readiness and recovery capacity. Manage coalition communications, meeting coordination, records, and reporting. Implement and advance the Coalition's strategic plan. Participate in regional and statewide disaster recovery and preparedness networks. Ideal Candidate The successful candidate will be a highly organized and collaborative leader who thrives in a mission-driven environment and can effectively bring diverse stakeholders together around a common purpose.
Preferred qualifications include:
Experience in disaster preparedness, response, recovery, emergency management, or community resilience initiatives. Strong project management and organizational skills. Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities. Experience working with nonprofits, government agencies, community organizations, and volunteers. Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects and partnerships. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and virtual collaboration tools.
