Job Description

General Description The purpose of this job within the organization is to monitor, maintain, and repair the vehicles assigned to the police department. This job works under close supervision according to set procedures. Works in the Administrative Bureau under the supervision of the Administrative Bureau Commander.
Duties and Responsibilities- Essential Functions:
Oversee the repair and maintenance operations of Police Department vehicles; coordinates vehicle concerns and issues with officers and vendors and usage of city-owned automated fueling facilities. Maintains an up-to-date inventory of Palmetto Police Department assets. Issues department equipment to personnel based on need and policy. Conducts cost analysis related to maintenance project bids; manages the fleet of leased vehicles including tracking, invoice reconciliation, and maintenance notification. Researches and develops specifications for vehicles, equipment, supplies/materials; plans and executes a vehicle and equipment replacement schedule. Reviews and processes purchase for parts/supplies; determines the benefits of outsourcing vehicle repairs.
Additional Duties:
Performs maintenance and minor repairs to community buildings and facilities. Maintains accurate records of equipment and vehicles issued and the supply room in a well-organized manner; conducts annual inventory/audit of department controlled capital assets. Performs related work as assigned.

Asset Responsibility:
Requires responsibility and opportunity for achieving moderate economies and/or preventing moderate losses through the management of a small division; handles supplies of high value or moderate amounts of money consistent with the operation of a small division. The decisions and oversight that the Police Fleet/Inventory Specialist has regarding purchasing, inventory, bids, and supervision of vendors have a significant financial impact in the City.
Mathematical Requirements:
Uses basic addition and subtraction, such as making change or measuring.
Communications Requirements:
Reads routine sentences, instructions, regulations, procedures or work orders; writes routine sentences and completes routine job forms and incident reports; speaks routine sentences using proper grammar.
Judgment Requirements:
Responsible for long range of goals, planning and methodologies. Decision-making is focus of the job, affecting entire organization and surrounding population; works in an unstable environment with frequent and significant changes in conditions. Must understand and practice the specific security and confidentiality protocols necessary for working at a police department.
Complexity of Work:
Performs semi-skilled work involving set procedures and rules, but with frequent problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.
Impact of Errors:
The impact of errors is moderate - affects those in work unit.
Physical Demands:
Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
Equipment Usage:
Leads or handles machines, tools, equipment or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items.
Unavoidable Hazards:
Involves routine and frequent exposureto extreme noise levels; animals/wildlife.
Safety of Others:
Requires considerable responsibility for the safety and health of others and/or continuous enforcement of the laws and standards of public health and safety.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college in mechanics, fleet maintenance, or a closely related field. Requires three months of experience as a fleet maintenance technician, inventory specialist, or closely related experience. Must be able to pass a Level II background check for police department employees.
