Job Description

Job Overview This role is responsible for facilities operations across multiple school sites, including preventive maintenance, daily repairs, emergency response, contractor coordination, custodial oversight, grounds support, and compliance with applicable safety and building standards. The ideal candidate is a practical, technically strong facilities leader who can both manage people and vendors and step in directly when building issues need immediate attention. Key Responsibilities Oversee daily facilities operations for school buildings, grounds, mechanical spaces, and common areas. Perform and coordinate preventive maintenance, routine repairs, inspections, and emergency maintenance. Monitor and support HVAC, boiler, plumbing, electrical, building automation, alarm, and safety systems. Supervise maintenance personnel, custodial services, vendors, and outside contractors. Develop scopes of work, coordinate repairs, review vendor performance, and support contract compliance. Maintain work orders, inspection records, preventive maintenance logs, and required documentation. Support compliance with MIOSHA standards, fire safety codes, boiler and pressure vessel requirements, and school safety expectations. Coordinate snow, debris, playground, entrance, roof, and grounds inspections to maintain safe school operations. Assist with facilities planning, budgeting, capital improvement coordination, and long-term maintenance priorities. Respond to after-hours facility emergencies, including system failures, weather events, alarms, leaks, outages, and safety hazards. Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Minimum of 3 years of experience in facilities management, building operations, maintenance leadership, or a related field. Current First-Class Boiler/Steam, High-Pressure Boiler Operator, Stationary Engineer, or equivalent boiler-related credential. Candidates must be able to provide documentation. Working knowledge of HVAC, boiler, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and preventive maintenance systems. Experience coordinating vendors, contractors, repairs, inspections, or maintenance schedules. Ability to manage multiple buildings, priorities, and emergency issues in a school environment. Ability to use work order systems, maintenance logs, email, and basic digital documentation tools. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in mechanical rooms, rooftops, basements, storage areas, outdoor areas, and active school facilities. Availability for after-hours emergency response when critical facility issues occur. Preferred Qualifications Experience in a K-12 school district, charter school, public sector, higher education, healthcare, or multi-building campus environment. Supervisory experience with maintenance, custodial, facilities, or contractor teams. Associate's or bachelor's degree in facilities management, engineering, construction management, or a related field. City of Detroit High Pressure Boiler Operator License or similar local credential. Experience with building automation systems, safety inspections, preventive maintenance programs, and facilities budgets.
