Architecture Construction Full Job Description Job Summary:
The Director of Facilities Management provides strategic leadership for district facilities, ensuring safe, efficient, and well‑maintained buildings that support teaching and learning. The role oversees maintenance, custodial, grounds, and facility operations, aligning resources, staff, and systems with district priorities. This position directly and indirectly supervises approximately 240 employees. Assists in the preparation of the budget, monitors budgeted expenditures and makes recommendations for the budget. The director leads district-wide facility operations, supervises department supervisors/managers, manages budgets, ensures regulatory compliance, and coordinates with internal and external partners to support long‑term facility needs.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership & Department Oversight:
  • Department leadership — Provide direction to maintenance, custodial, and grounds teams to ensure consistent, high‑quality service.
  • Staff development — Support hiring, training, evaluation, and professional growth of department personnel.
  • Operational planning — Establish goals, priorities, and performance expectations aligned with district needs.
  • Collaboration — Work with district leaders to coordinate facility support for campuses and programs.
Operational Management:
  • Facility maintenance oversight — Ensure buildings, systems, and equipment are maintained to district standards.
  • Work order systems — Monitor workflow, response times, and service quality.
  • Custodial and grounds operations — Ensure clean, safe, and well‑maintained campuses.
  • Vendor coordination — Oversee contracted services and ensure performance meets expectations.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE & ON-CALL EXPECTATIONS
  • Emergency coordination — Support district response to facility‑related emergencies.
  • System reliability — Ensure critical systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing) remain operational.
  • Incident support — Mobilize staff and resources as needed during emergency events.
  • On Call Support — Lead year-round efforts that ensure rapid response to emergencies that may impact the district's ability to open schools on time.
FISCAL STEWARDSHIP
  • Budget management — Develop and manage departmental budgets responsibly.
  • Resource efficiency — Identify cost‑saving opportunities and promote efficient use of district resources.
  • Long‑range planning — Support planning for capital needs, equipment replacement, and facility improvements.
REGULATORY COMPLIANCE & SAFETY
  • Code compliance — Ensure district facilities meet applicable building, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Risk mitigation — Coordinate inspections, testing, and corrective actions related to environmental health and safety.
GENERAL:
  • Procurement support — Assist with selecting and evaluating supplies, equipment, and materials.
  • Program support — Contribute to district initiatives, special projects, and operational improvements.
  • Other duties — Perform additional responsibilities as needed to support district operations.
Minimum Education, Experience & Certification:
  • Bachelor's degree required. Degree in facility management, architecture, business or engineering preferred.
  • 10 years leadership experience in facility maintenance & operations with K-12 school districts is strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Skills in maintenance operations, grounds care, custodial operations, management and budgeting. Knowledge of facilities maintenance, custodial, management, budgeting, federal, state and local laws. Knowledge of building construction techniques and methods. Knowledge of state, federal and local building codes including electrical, mechanical and fire codes. Knowledge of environmental standards relating to building construction including asbestos abatement, PCB regulations, federal chemical control programs and hazardous waste management. Ability to lead and manage Department personnel. Ability to supervise in a fair and efficient manner. Ability to prepare professional reports. Ability to read technical manuals, blueprints and various publications
Pay:
$121,304.00 - $148,841.00 per year
