Forklift Operator Job Description This position is for a semi-experienced sit-down forklift operator who will work outdoors in a lumber yard, moving large roof trusses before and after the production assembly process. The role requires careful attention to detail, strong situational awareness, and the ability to handle very large, awkward materials safely. You will play a crucial part in keeping production flowing smoothly and may also assist with loading trucks as needed. Responsibilities Operate a sit-down forklift outdoors in the yard to move large roof trusses before and after the production assembly process. Carefully pick up, move, and place large trusses, ensuring correct positioning and safe handling at all times. Support the flow of product through the yard by moving materials efficiently between staging, production, and loading areas. Assist with loading trucks with finished trusses and other materials using the forklift and pallet jacks. Perform general labor tasks in the yard as needed, including material handling and staging of lumber and trusses. Essential Skills At least 3 years of forklift operating experience, preferably on sit-down forklifts. Proven ability to handle large materials safely, such as roof trusses or similar oversized loads. Comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions, including sun, heat, cold, and rain. Strong work ethic with a focus on reliability, punctuality, and consistent performance. Experience with material handling tasks, including loading, picking, and using pallet jacks. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bilingual communication skills are preferred. Previous experience working with large trusses or in a lumber yard environment is highly desirable. Experience performing general labor tasks in an outdoor, industrial, or construction-related setting. Desire to grow within the organization and take on additional responsibilities over time. Openness to working overtime and mandatory Saturday shifts when required by production demand. Why Work Here? The environment is fast-paced and safety-focused, with a structured two-week training period that includes shadowing, hands-on yard work, and on-site forklift certification for the specific equipment used. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of New Bedford, MA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr.
