As Citizens of the World Los Angeles looks toward the future, the Director of Development will be critical in expanding and strengthening development efforts to raise more than $3 million per year and growing every year with the growth of the organization. This will take place through thoughtful relationship-building, the creation of long-term development systems for the organization, and hands-on partnership with the Executive Director, COO/CFO, Board of Directors, Principals, parent leaders, and other stakeholders in the region. CWC LA is seeking a dynamic, creative, and entrepreneurial development professional who wants to make a difference providing strategic leadership across all areas of development. Reporting to the Head of Strategy, the Director of Development will be responsible for external fundraising from foundations, corporations, and individuals; internal fundraising from caregivers from all CWC LA schools; managing the implementation of capital campaigns; as well as guiding the functional operations for the department. Additionally, numerous other staff and volunteers will indirectly report to the role during collaborative efforts to support school-based fundraising. The ideal candidate for this role will be collaborative, entrepreneurial, process-oriented, energetic, and adaptable. This will be well-versed in fundraising best practices, with the experience to develop strategic and effective fundraising plans, execute to meet objectives, and problem-solve independently. Working in a fast- paced, dynamic, educational environment, the Director of Development will need to be highly self-motivated, creative, and personally accountable. This position is based in CWC LA's regional office and requires travel to each of our schools on a regular basis.
Responsibilities:
Meet annual fundraising goals for each school and manage all facets of fundraising campaigns. This includes planning soup-to-nuts overarching campaigns for three major giving campaigns across the region-annual family giving, annual school "thons" and auction /spring festivals. Additionally, the Director of Development will help with major donor identification and cultivation, researching grants, developing and executing various campaigns to raise more than $3M per year. Partner with the Executive Director to develop and execute a major gift program and strategy, including identifying existing and potential major or capital campaign donors, creating stewardship and solicitation plans, preparing for donor meetings, leading site visits, and managing relationships. Work with school-based fundraising teams and principals to provide strategic direction, guidance, and communications management to support the successful solicitation from school constituencies (including parents, grandparents, alumni, and staff) for gifts to community giving campaigns throughout the school year. Develop strategies around innovation for new revenue streams over time as the organization grows and refines its systems. In partnership with the CFO/COO and Executive Director, set the financial targets for all fundraising (internal and external) and ensure all fundraising goals are being met. Also develop and manage project and event timelines and ensure all campaigns and events are on-track while providing guidance and troubleshooting support on any challenges. Oversee the implementation and management of best practices in development infrastructure, including systems processes and tools to ensure effectiveness and accountability across fundraising functions. Research, prepare, and submit grant proposal requests and reports from various funders in collaboration with the Executive Director. Manage grants calendar, ensuring proposals and reports are submitted in a timely manner. Liaise with a third party grant writer. Create plans to expand corporate partnerships, working with schools to develop packages for sponsorship, building relationships with corporate partners and coordinating engagement or volunteer activities related to obtaining corporate support.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and 7+ years of direct fundraising leadership experience and/or education marketing and communications experience. Strong knowledge of development best practices and implementing necessary systems and processes to support an efficient and effective development operation. Demonstrated success at securing grants and sponsorships, as well as cultivating, stewarding and soliciting major donors. Ambitious and entrepreneurial orientation; history of creating from scratch and/or professionalizing a development function within a fast-paced, high growth environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills with proven ability to tell a compelling story. Excellent planning and organizational skills, with particular attention to detail and the demonstrated ability to manage multiple ongoing projects from start to finish. Ability to develop trust and strong collaborative working relationships with parents, donors, volunteers, Board and staff. Commitment to building strong and invested teams. Comfortable with the cold phase of donor acquisition - finding, meeting and engaging individuals with no prior connection to CWC. Ability to establish processes and put systems into place that allow the program to scale. Demonstrated ability to think creatively and bring fresh ideas and approaches to development initiatives. Flexibility, drive, a sense of humor, and a "roll-up-your-sleeves" approach. Experience working in the development or advancement office of an education or school setting or non- profit organization; in particular, experience successfully engaging families and activating volunteer committees. Experience managing development operations and strong computer software and reporting skills. Experience working with development databases and crowdfunding platforms preferred.
