Our mission is to provide compassionate care, advocacy, and support for animals while educating the community about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare. POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Development reports to the Chief Development Officer and plays a key role in advancing the fundraising goals of the Company. As a core member of the Development Team, this position supports the organization's mission by leading and managing the annual and individual giving program and strengthening a reliable base of philanthropic support. The Director of Development is primarily responsible for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding small to mid-level donors, with an emphasis on driving repeatable, sustainable giving. The role focuses on execution and donor engagement, including the planning and implementation of year-round fundraising initiatives, targeted campaigns, and donor retention strategies. Working in close partnership with the Chief Development Officer who provides overarching strategic leadership across all fundraising channels, the Director of Development is accountable for annual fund revenue growth, donor participation, recurring giving, sponsorship support, and data-informed fundraising efforts. This position collaborates closely with marketing, leadership, staff, and volunteers to ensure consistent messaging and strong donor experiences. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Donor Portfolio Management:
Manage a portfolio of individual, corporate, and select foundation donors, focusing on cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of long-term philanthropic support. Fundraising Cycle Management:
Lead donor engagement through all stages of the fundraising cycle, including discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Annual Giving:
Plan and execute annual giving initiatives with defined goals related to individual gifts, donor retention, and recurring support. Grant & Sponsorship Support:
Develop and submit select grant proposals to corporations and foundations; secure sponsorships for signature and other fundraising events as needed. New Donor Development:
Research and engage prospective individual, corporate, and foundation donors to expand the organization's donor base. Board & Volunteer Support:
Provide strategic and logistical support to Board-led and Auxiliary Board fundraising efforts in collaboration with the Chief Development Officer and senior leadership. Events & Cultivation:
Attend community, networking, and donor cultivation events to strengthen relationships and identify new prospects. Recognition & Naming Opportunities:
Support donor recognition initiatives, including naming opportunities, tribute gifts, and other recognition programs. Events, Sponsorships & Ticket Revenue:
Support fundraising events by securing sponsorships, promoting ticket sales, cultivating event donors, and contributing to overall event revenue goals in collaboration with the Development and Marketing teams. Data & Reporting:
Maintain accurate donor records in the CRM (Arreva); track performance metrics; analyze giving trends; and prepare regular fundraising reports for the Chief Development Officer. Planning & Collaboration:
Actively participate in the planning and execution of donor cultivation activities and fundraising calendars in partnership with the Development Team. Other Duties:
Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support the organization's fundraising goals. QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., nonprofit management, communications, marketing, business, public administration, or similar) required; advanced degree preferred. Minimum of five (5) years of professional nonprofit fundraising experience with a demonstrated record of success. Strong understanding of donor relationship-building and the nonprofit development landscape. Demonstrated experience in grant writing, including researching funding opportunities, developing proposals, and managing reporting requirements for corporate and foundation grants. Ability to think strategically while executing tactically and managing multiple priorities. Proficiency with donor management systems and fundraising technologies. Excellent written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with volunteers and leadership. Public speaking and presentation experience. Knowledge of fundraising best practices and techniques. Previous experience in animal welfare or a mission-driven nonprofit preferred. Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Sitting for prolonged periods while working at a desk or computer. Frequent use of a computer, including typing and viewing screens for extended periods. Occasional standing, walking, and light lifting of office materials (up to 10-15 pounds).
