Job Description

The Indianapolis Zoo invites an experienced, self-driven fundraising professional to join one of Indiana's most dynamic advancement teams as our next Major Gift Officer. This is a rare opportunity to do work that is genuinely consequential - connecting donors who care deeply about protecting nature and inspiring people to care for our world. The Indianapolis Zoo is one of the nation's premier zoological institutions, and one of the largest self-sustaining zoos, aquarium, and botanical gardens in the United States. We have just completed a transformational $53 million capital campaign - ahead of schedule - and are now building the next chapter of our philanthropic story around a bold new strategic plan. The MGO will operate with significant independence, managing a portfolio of up to 150 qualified prospects, implementing strategy from cultivation through closure and long-term stewardship. This is not a support role. It is a frontline relationship role for someone who is energized by building authentic donor conversations and motivated by advancing a critical mission.
Position Requirements and Experience:
A minimum of five years of frontline major gift fundraising experience, with demonstrated success managing a personal portfolio and closing gifts at the five-figure level or above. Sound understanding of fundraising best practices. Extremely comfortable working with people, with a proven ability to cultivate, build, and sustain relationships; analyze and utilize database information; and write and track proposals. Exceptional communication skills, a professional and positive demeanor and time management skills. Knowledge of Indianapolis and surrounding communities is preferred. Experience in creating and working with volunteers, board members and donors. Ability to meet short and long-term goals is required. Works effectively with others and is an excellent team player. Familiarity in working with nonprofit organizations is required. Familiarity with the Zoo's mission and general organization is preferred. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Excellent oral communication skills and writing ability. Proficiency in accuracy, detail, and follow-up. Ability to multi-task; handle stressful situations and deadline pressures. A competent user of Raiser's Edge NXT or similar database is required. Must be an intermediate user of Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
To apply:
Interested candidates must complete an online application. Interested candidates must include a resume, cover letter, and salary requirements to be considered.
