Role Overview:
City Surf Project is seeking an experienced Development Director to lead our revenue strategy. The Development Director will be responsible for designing and executing a comprehensive development program that strives to sustain and increase current revenue streams (currently bringing in $1.1 million annually) while ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of CSP. As a member of the leadership team and reporting directly to the Executive Director, this role oversees all aspects of fundraising, including major gifts, corporate sponsorships, foundation grants, individual giving, and events. This role will work closely with the Executive Director to execute the major donor strategy and with the Grants Manager on foundation grant strategy. The role will lead a small development team of one other staffmember but with ambitions to grow this team. The ideal candidate has a proven track record of generating revenue, expanding funding opportunities,and meeting or exceeding fundraising and financial goals. They are a strategic relationship builder who can leverage partnerships, donor engagement, and business development efforts to drive sustainable growth, and have experience leading high-impact fundraising campaigns and events that deliver measurable results.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership Create and implement a development plan to meet strategic goals yearly, leveraging data for forecasting, activity tracking, and accountability. Establish and meet annual revenue goal (currently $1.1 million) and prospecting targets, driving the development pipeline and guiding a small team. Over time, increase our current revenue streams and yearly revenue goal in order to support sustainability and organizational growth. Identify and pursue new revenue streams to diversify and grow CSP's funding base. Craft a compelling case for supporting CSP programs, engaging the community for philanthropic support through individual donations, major gifts, sponsorships, and attending fundraisers. Represent CSP's development function at board meetings, committee meetings, and with external stakeholders. Donor Management & Major Gifts Lead fundraising efforts by maintaining and growing a portfolio of individual, corporate, and foundation prospects, overseeing all stages of the gift cycle, and nurturing donor relationships through meaningful interactions. Identify and cultivate major donor prospects to be introduced to the Executive Director for further cultivation and stewardship. Oversee all donor communications, acknowledgments, and stewardship activities to ensure a high-quality donor experience. Utilize CRM (Salesforce) to manage donor records, track engagement, analyze giving trends, and generate reports. Manage the online donor platform (GoFundMe Pro), including campaigns, communications,reporting, and Salesforce integration. Corporate Partnerships & Sponsorships Develop and grow a robust portfolio of corporate sponsors through proactive outreach, relationship management, and compelling sponsorship proposals. Cultivate long-term partnerships with corporations that align with CSP's mission and values. Create sponsorship packages and fulfillment reports that demonstrate impact and ROI for corporate partners. Grants Oversight Provide strategic oversight and partnership to the Grants Manager, ensuring grant goals are aligned with the development plan. Track all grant funding in Salesforce in collaboration with the Grants Manager. Support grant funding with prospect research and funder cultivation, as needed. Board of Directors Management Manage the Board of Directors' individual giving plans and support board members in meeting their fundraising goals. Provide regular development updates and pipeline reports to the Board to ensure alignment and accountability. Leadership and Management Work closely with the Leadership Team—including the Executive Director and Director of Operations—to coordinate, strategize, and achieve organization-wide goals. Collaborate with the program team to generate impact reports and create compelling content. Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Executive Director on fundraising priorities, donor strategy, and organizational sustainability. Work alongside the Executive Director to execute fundraising plans, ensuring clear communication and clear accountability. Manage, mentor, and support the development team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture. Financial Management Manage development department budget including future projections, expense and revenue tracking, and regular reconciliations against the general budget, with periodic progress reporting to leadership. Provide regular revenue reporting and financial analysis to the Executive Director and Board of Directors. Events Lead the planning and execution of an annual fundraising gala or signature event to sustain funding and deepen donor relationships. Lead the planning and execution of additional events including donor engagement, community building, and partnership events throughout the year. Evaluate the effectiveness of current events in order to identify the most impactful opportunities. Marketing & Communications Oversee and manage all external communications including social media, newsletters, and website. Ensure consistent and compelling external communications that reflect CSP's brand and mission. Qualifications Education & Experience Bachelor's degree preferred but not required; advanced degree in nonprofit management, communications, or a related field also preferred but not required. Minimum 3 years of progressive fundraising experience, with at least 2 years experience in a management role. 5+ years progressive fundraising experience strongly preferred. Demonstrated success in securing major gifts, corporate sponsorships, and foundation grants. Experience managing and executing fundraising events of various types and sizes. Proven track record of meeting or exceeding fundraising goals in a nonprofit environment. Experience managing a development team. Skills & Competencies Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including effective donor correspondence. Strategic thinker with the ability to translate vision into actionable plans and measurable outcomes. Proficient in Salesforce or other CRM, including data management, reporting, and light admin functions. Excellent computer skills including Google Workspace, Excel, GoFundMe Pro, Mailchimp, and Squarespace. Strong interpersonal skills and comfort working in a small, collaborative office environment. Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail. High degree of empathy, cultural competency, and commitment to equity and inclusion. Physical Requirements Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while working at a desk or attending meetings. Capacity to lift and carry up to 20 lbs (event materials, promotional items, etc.). Occasional outdoor work for events or site visits, with comfort in varying weather conditions. Mobility to travel locally for meetings and events as needed.
