Job Description:
The Executive Director is a strategically minded leader with research experience, a strong background in agriculture, and the ability to foster strong relationships. Position Overview A well-established Hawai?i-based nonprofit agricultural research organization is seeking a dynamic Executive Director to lead its next phase of growth and impact. This individual will oversee all aspects of the organization's operations, including strategy, financial sustainability, and external partnerships. The Executive Director will work at the intersection of science, agriculture, and community, guiding research initiatives while securing funding, building strategic relationships, and representing the organization with government agencies, industry partners, and stakeholders. This role is ideal for a leader who can balance mission-driven work with operational and financial leadership to advance sustainable agriculture in Hawai?i and other tropical regions. Responsibilities Provide overall leadership and strategic direction for the organization Drive financial sustainability through grants, contracts, and partnerships Build and maintain relationships with government, industry, academic, and community stakeholders Partner closely with the Board of Directors to achieve organizational goals Oversee research programs, ensuring delivery on timelines, budgets, and outcomes Lead, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary team of scientific and professional staff Identify growth opportunities and expand partnerships locally, nationally, and internationally Ensure compliance with regulatory, financial, and organizational requirements Represent the organization publicly with funders, policymakers, and the broader community Skills Strong executive leadership and organizational management Experience securing and managing diverse funding sources (grants, contracts, partnerships) Ability to build strategic partnerships across public and private sectors Strong financial and budget management expertise Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills Ability to lead scientific or research-oriented teams without needing to be a technical specialist Strategic thinking with the ability to balance mission, growth, and operational stability Requirements Advanced degree in agriculture, natural resources, environmental science, or a related field 5+ years of leadership or management experience Demonstrated success leading teams and delivering program outcomes Experience managing budgets and financial operations Track record of securing funding (federal, state, or private) Experience working in research, agriculture, environmental, or related sectors Strong communication skills and ability to engage diverse stakeholders
