Job Description
The Tool Room Assitant supports production by managing the distribution, tracking, maintenance, and inventory of tools and consumables used in a steel fabrication environment. This role works closely with Purchasing, Production, Maintenance, and other departments to ensure tools and supplies are available when needed, inventory is accurate, and reorder needs are managed proactively. The position also supports the continuous improvement of tool room organization, standardization, and workflow efficiency to reduce loss, control costs, and minimize downtime. What You'll Do Issue, receive, and track hand tools, power tools, welding accessories, and specialty fabrication equipment. Maintain control of tool distribution, ensuring accountability and accurate usage records. Inspect returned tools for wear or damage; remove defective items from service and coordinate repair or replacement. Monitor inventory levels of tools and consumables (cutting discs, drill bits, welding supplies, PPE, etc.) and initiate timely reorders. Partner with Purchasing to coordinate replenishment, vendor support, and cost-effective ordering. Collaborate with Production and Maintenance to anticipate tool needs, support upcoming jobs, and prevent delays or downtime. Perform cycle counts and maintain accurate inventory records using manual logs or inventory/ERP systems. Maintain well-organized storage areas with standardized locations, clear labeling, and visual controls. Prepare job-specific tool kits and respond quickly to urgent shop requests. Help establish and maintain standard processes for tool control, storage, and inventory management. Identify opportunities to improve organization, reduce loss or excess inventory, and streamline tool room operations. Ensure tools and equipment meet company safety requirements and OSHA standards. What You Bring Working knowledge of tools and equipment used in steel fabrication, welding, or manufacturing environments. Experience managing tool control, inventory, or materials in an industrial setting. Ability to coordinate and communicate effectively across departments, including Purchasing, Production, and Maintenance. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Basic mechanical aptitude for tool inspection and minor maintenance. Experience maintaining organized work areas and following standardized processes. Reliability, accountability, and a strong safety mindset. Ability to work in a fast-paced industrial environment and lift up to 50 lbs. Education | Experience High school diploma or GED required. 1-3 years of experience in a tool room, warehouse, manufacturing, or steel fabrication environment preferred. Experience with inventory control systems or ERP software is a plus. Experience supporting purchasing, materials replenishment, or vendor coordination preferred. Forklift certification (or ability to obtain) preferred.
