We're looking for a results-driven, commercially minded individual with a continuous improvement mindset to fill our fuel procurement role. This position plays a critical role in driving company profitability through strategic fuel purchasing, supplier negotiation, and supply coordination. This is not a traditional purchasing role; the ideal candidate will bring commodities-based procurement experience, with the ability to evaluate market conditions, execute time-sensitive purchasing decisions (including day-deal opportunities), and negotiate effectively in a dynamic pricing environment. This role is responsible for fuel procurement for all JB Dewar sites and for procuring truckloads of fuel for over 100 customers, and coordinating deliveries of 10+ trucks daily. Success in this role requires balancing market strategy, vendor management, and logistics execution to ensure supply reliability while optimizing cost and margin. This position operates in a dynamic environment where fuel purchasing and deliveries often occur outside of traditional business hours; as such, schedule flexibility is required and will vary based on operational needs.Job Responsibilities:
Monitor fuel market trends, rack pricing, and real-time pricing to identify cost-saving opportunities Execute strategic and tactical fuel purchases, including time-sensitive "day deals" and spot opportunities Negotiate pricing, terms, freight, and fees with fuel suppliers to optimize margins and ensure supply reliability Develop and maintain strong relationships with preferred suppliers while identifying new sourcing opportunities Coordinate with the logistics and distribution teams to schedule and oversee fuel deliveries, including split loads and multi-location deliveries Ensure timely movement of fuel from supply racks (Fresno, San Jose, Los Angeles) to in-ground storage tanks and customer locations Partner closely with Sales to align fuel supply with customer demand and pricing strategies Collaborate with the Distribution Manager to ensure efficient dispatch and delivery execution Assess supplier performance, reliability, and adherence to commitments in a fluctuating market Analyze fuel consumption patterns and proactively forecast short-term supply needs Maintain accurate records of fuel transactions, pricing, and inventories Work with Finance to manage invoicing, supplier payments, and credit availability Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and environmental policies Participate in cross-functional problem-solving related to fuel supply and distribution Interact with customers as needed to support fulfillment and service expectations Become proficient in internal procurement systems (currently Ascend)Skills & Qualifications:
Experience in commodities-based purchasing (fuel, energy, agriculture, or similar markets strongly preferred) Demonstrated success in negotiation and supplier management in a dynamic pricing environment Strong understanding of market-driven pricing and margin optimization Experience coordinating logistics, dispatch, or supply chain execution Ability to make real-time decisions under pressure with direct financial impact Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities Excellent communication and relationship management skills Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment Experience with pricing tools, ERP systems, or inventory management software preferred Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups preferred but not required) Understanding of environmental and regulatory requirements related to fuel procurementQualifications:
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in commodities purchasing, supply chain, or related field 3-5+ years of experience in commodities procurement, fuel purchasing, or a relevant market-based buying role Experience in logistics, dispatch, or fuel distribution preferred Strong computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel) Must type at least 30 wpm Excellent verbal and written communication skills Ability to work independently with strong time management and ownershipEssential Physical Functions:
