Denver's Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is looking for an Accounting Specialist to join their team! In this role, you will - broadly - manage and optimize financial systems, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, overseeing the preparation and auditing of financial reports, and providing specialized financial process analysis for DOTI employees and stakeholders. Specifically, as the Accounting Specialist, you will: Serve as a highly skilled right-hand partner to financial leadership, thriving in complexity and supporting a multi-billion-dollar capital portfolio and over half a billion dollars across multiple complicated revenue streams. Review, design, and enhance internal controls aligned with COSO; identify risks, evaluate processes, and recommend corrective actions. Collaborate across internal departments, city agencies, and external partners to obtain information, resolve discrepancies, and support informed decision-making. Maintain meticulous documentation, manage competing priorities, and communicate proactively while operating independently. Contribute to a culture of accuracy, accountability, curiosity, continuous improvement, collaboration, and proactive problem solving. Administer financial systems to design and generate specialized reports for DOTI, producing separately audited financial statements. Collaborate with Technology Services to manage applications, troubleshoot reports, and ensure the integrity of databases and financial systems. Lead financial system projects focused on accounting transactions, researching and resolving issues, testing reports for efficiency, streamlining processes, and performing complex financial calculations for management review. Ensure compliance with financial regulations, reporting requirements, and fiscal accountability, adhering to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Oversee the configuration and customization of financial systems, including application modules, report queries, data integrity, troubleshooting, and implementing solutions. Administer security authorizations and train staff on system updates and report processes. Oversee the annual audit process for complex financial records, including grants, ensuring accuracy in financial statements, identifying discrepancies, recommending corrective actions, and coordinating external auditors throughout the audit. Oversee the preparation of the City's externally audited financial reports, including balance sheets, cash flow statements, capital assets, investments, and debt positions. Work with external auditors and client groups to ensure accuracy and oversee the revision of prior year accruals for the annual report. Oversee departmental transactions to ensure compliance with Fiscal Accountability Rules, implement internal controls, evaluate processes, and recommend corrective actions. Resolve complex discrepancies in journal and accounting transactions, monitor batch processes, analyze reporting errors, and guide management on necessary corrective actions. Perform other related duties as assigned. What You'll Bring Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics: Experience with complex financial reconciliations and auditing processes. Experience and expertise with financial software integration, implementation, and management. Experience in governmental or fund accounting. Experience instituting internal controls. Familiarity with GAAP, GASB, and comfortability researching accounting standards and principles Required Minimum Qualifications Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
Experience Requirement:
Three (3) years of full performance, professional level experience analyzing accounting functions, preparing specialized financial reports and statements, and managing accounting programs and financial systems.
Education/Experience Equivalency:
No substitution of experience for education is permitted. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.
