About the Role The Equipment Specialist is responsible for managing and optimizing equipment availability across Matson's domestic intermodal network, including the Matson 53' fleet and domestic repositioning programs. This role plays a key part in capacity planning, cost management, and supplier negotiation. This position requires strong analytical thinking, negotiation expertise, and cross-functional collaboration to develop equipment strategies that enhance service delivery while managing costs. What you'll do: Equipment Strategy & Capacity Management Manage equipment availability across assigned 53' markets, ensuring adequate inventory to meet customer demand. Develop and execute equipment utilization and repositioning strategies to minimize empty moves and optimize asset use. Identify capacity solutions and secure equipment to support freight movement. Vendor & Carrier Management Negotiate rates and agreements with depots, railroads, drayage providers, and repositioning suppliers. Establish and maintain strong relationships with carriers and vendors to ensure reliable capacity and competitive pricing. Collaborate with suppliers to secure capacity and manage repositioning programs effectively. Cost Management & Financial Oversight Negotiate repositioning fees, depot costs, drayage rates, and related equipment charges. Track and manage per diem, storage, and maintenance costs. Develop and maintain reporting tools to monitor cost performance and identify optimization opportunities. Research and apply accessorial charges related to equipment usage and responsibilities. Cross-Functional Collaboration Partner with Sales, Pricing, Customer Service, and Operations teams to communicate equipment availability and support business needs. Support pricing strategies for domestic repositioning and equipment utilization. Assist in balancing supply and demand to avoid capacity shortages or surpluses. Operational Execution & Reporting Maintain accurate inventory, tracking, invoicing, and reporting related to equipment management. Provide timely updates on equipment availability, capacity constraints, and market conditions. Support maintenance and repair coordination for equipment assets. Professional Standards & Continuous Improvement Identify opportunities to improve processes, efficiency, and cost control across equipment operations. Comply with all company policies, procedures, and safety standards. Perform additional duties as assigned to support business priorities.
You have these qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required; degree in Transportation, Business, or related field preferred. 3+ years of transportation or intermodal industry experience. Strong knowledge of equipment management, intermodal networks, and repositioning strategies. Proven negotiation skills and ability to manage vendor relationships. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and transportation systems. Excellent communication and collaboration skills across internal and external stakeholders. The salary offered will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations.
