Job Summary:
The Maintenance Assistant/Transportation Specialist is responsible for maintaining the grounds, facility, and equipment safely and efficiently under federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. In addition, this position is responsible for transporting residents to and from appointments, activities, and other destinations. This role requires working in all areas of the facility, moving intermittently during working hours, and being subject to frequent interruptions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on the facility, equipment, and grounds as directed by the supervisor.
- Transport residents to and from appointments, activities, and other destinations as needed.
- Ensure that vehicles are maintained safely and efficiently and comply with applicable regulations.
- Coordinate transportation schedules with the activity's director and nursing staff.
- Interact with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
- Communicate effectively with maintenance personnel and other facility personnel.
- Work beyond regular working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary and in other positions as needed.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
- Handle and dispose of hazardous materials safely and appropriately.
- Work in cramped spaces and in adverse weather conditions as needed.
- Minimize waste of supplies, misuse of equipment
Qualifications:
- Must possess, as a minimum, a 10th-grade education.
- None required. On-the-job training provided.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Must make independent decisions, follow instructions, and accept constructive criticism.
- Must deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
- Must maintain the care and use of supplies, equipment, etc., and keep the appearance of maintenance work areas.
- Must be willing to work harmoniously with other personnel as well as be ready to handle residents based on whatever maturity level they are currently functioning.
- Must be able to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing maintenance practices.
- Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
- Must be able to relate information concerning a resident's condition.
- Must not directly threaten the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Physical and Sensory Requirements:
- Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
- Must be able to speak the English language understandably.
- Must be able to manage the pressure of the position.
- Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics to enable these senses to function adequately.
- Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents and personnel.
- Must meet the general health requirements set forth by this facility's policies, including a medical and physical examination.
- Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, combative residents within the facility.
- Must be able to push, pull, move, and lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and push, pull, transfer, and carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.
- It may be necessary to assist in evacuating residents during emergencies.
- Must have an unencumbered driver license.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
