Job Description

Shelter Operations Director Muscatine Humane Society - Muscatine, IA 52761 Our director is retiring, and the Muscatine Humane Society is seeking an experienced and compassionate leader to guide our organization into the future. The Muscatine Humane Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting animal welfare in our community by providing shelter and compassionate care to homeless companion animals. In addition to sheltering animals, we operate a state-of-the-art training building where we offer dog training classes, behavior seminars, and guidance to help pet owners address minor behavioral issues. Our goal is to help keep pets in their existing homes whenever possible rather than having them surrendered to the shelter. We are a small but busy shelter caring for approximately 3,000 animals annually with a team of 15 employees and dedicated volunteers. We are the only animal shelter serving our city and county. We maintain contracts with several surrounding communities to accept stray dogs, while the City of Muscatine operates its own animal control program. The Shelter Operations Director serves as the public face and spokesperson for the organization and is responsible for leadership, operational oversight, fundraising, and maintaining strong community relationships. The Ideal Candidate Will Be A collaborative team builder who empowers staff and volunteers Passionate about and deeply committed to animal welfare Comfortable engaging donors, supporters, and community leaders Respectful and compassionate toward people from all backgrounds Adaptable and understands that the work of animal welfare may extend beyond a typical 5:00 p.m. workday Shelter Director Responsibilities Staff leadership and personnel management Financial oversight including budgeting and financial reporting Oversight of daily shelter operations and animal care standards Serving as liaison to the Board of Directors Overseeing and participating in fundraising events and initiatives Building and property maintenance oversight Managing social media platforms and adoption websites Scheduling and coordinating veterinarians for spay/neuter surgery days and vaccine clinics Scheduling and coordinating instructors for obedience classes, agility training, and canine behavior seminars Building and maintaining positive relationships with the community, partner organizations, and donors Supporting volunteer coordination and community engagement Education & Experience Minimum 3 years in a leadership or management role, preferably within a nonprofit or animal welfare organization Experience working with animals, particularly companion animals in a shelter, rescue, or veterinary setting, is preferred Previous attendance or certification in seminars or training related to canine behavior, breed traits, dog fighting, euthanasia practices, hoarding situations, acclimating shelter dogs to new homes, or fostering programs is beneficial Skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Proficiency in financial management, including budgeting and reporting Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment Ability to develop and implement strategic plans Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and guide staff and volunteers Organizational and problem-solving skills Compensation & Benefits Salary range: $45,000 - $55,000 per year , commensurate with experience and qualifications.
