Job Description

Job Summary We are seeking a dynamic and visionary Executive Director to lead and elevate our nonprofit organization. This pivotal role requires a passionate leader committed to advancing our mission through strategic oversight, innovative business management, and inspiring leadership. The Executive Director will serve as the primary representative of the organization, fostering strong community partnerships, overseeing daily operations and ensuring sustainable growth. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated professional eager to make a meaningful impact while guiding a dedicated team toward achieving goals. This is a temporary contract position that can transition to a permanent role with benefits for the right individual. Schedule can be flexible (i.e. between school drop off/pick up) with some evenings required.

5 part-time therapists, Clinical Director and administrative support/contracted roles About Youth & Family Counseling Services Youth & Family Counseling Services (YFCS) is a nonprofit outpatient mental health organization that has served the community for over 100 years . Our mission is to provide accessible, high-quality mental health counseling and education to individuals and families in need— regardless of ability to pay . YFCS offers free, low-cost, and sliding-scale services to ensure care is available to all. YFCS provides counseling services to children, adolescents, adults, families, and seniors , addressing a wide range of prevalent mental health challenges. We serve residents of Westfield, Summit, Berkeley Heights, Chatham, New Providence, and surrounding communities in Union County . Each year, YFCS delivers approximately 2000 counseling sessions and remains committed to meeting the growing mental health needs of our community. Position Overview The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the leadership, day-to-day management and long-term sustainability of the organization. Working in partnership with the Board of Directors, the ED ensures high-quality counseling services, sound financial management, strong staff support and active community presence. This role includes major responsibility for fundraising, grant writing, business development, marketing and external relations. The ED embodies the organization's mission and values and serves as its primary spokesperson and community ambassador. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Strategy Partner with the Board to set and implement strategic priorities. Lead organizational planning, service expansion and community partnerships throughout Union County. Develop metrics to evaluate program effectiveness, grant applications and mission impact. Operations & Staff Administration Oversee Clinical Director who will manage daily operations including scheduling, client intake and telehealth systems. Supervise and support 5 part-time therapists and any administrative staff or contractors. Provide assistance in hiring new therapists. Ensure a positive organizational culture and opportunities for professional development. Implement regular staff meetings. Maintain clear policies, procedures and best practices tailored to counseling services. Oversee building and grounds management. Maintain and update website. Financial Management Develop, manage, and report on the ~$300K annual budget. Maintain internal controls, ethical financial practices and compliance with nonprofit regulations. Work closely with the Board Finance Committee and bookkeeper/accounting professionals. Oversee financial audits. Oversee and understand financial billing systems and monthly reporting on number of sessions, patients, cancellations. Negotiate contracts, insurance rates where possible. Fundraising, Grants & Revenue Development Create and execute a diversified fundraising plan including major donors, grants, events and sponsorships. Research, write, and manage grant proposals and monthly reporting to the Board. Explore revenue-generating partnerships with schools, healthcare providers, employers and community organizations. Strengthen relationships with donors and funders through stewardship and communication. Marketing, Public Relations & Advocacy Lead communications and visibility efforts: website, social media, branding, brochures, newsletters. Represent the organization at events, meetings and speaking engagements. Alongside Clinical Director, plan several monthly group events that provide assistance around timely mental health issues (divorce, job loss, elder care, bullying and more). Advocate for mental health access and community needs in Westfield and surrounding areas. Compliance, Quality & Risk Management Ensure adherence to HIPAA and all NJ state regulations pertaining to counseling services. Oversee therapist licensure compliance and maintain required agency documentation. Manage liability, program quality, data privacy and client care standards. Board Relations & Governance Serve as the primary liaison between Board and staff. Prepare monthly reports, financial updates and meeting materials. Meet with Board monthly and on an ad-hoc basis to discuss relevant topics. Support board recruitment, development and committee work. Qualifications Bachelor's degree required. Skills in marketing, communications, donor relations and community engagement preferred. Demonstrated success in fundraising and grant writing or willingness to learn and implement. Financial oversight experience including budgeting and reporting. Supervisory experience with clinical or counseling staff preferred. Strong organizational, interpersonal and relationship-building skills. Ability to thrive in a small nonprofit environment where the ED "wears many hats."
