Job Description

Position Overview We are seeking a mission-driven and relationship-focused Director of Development to lead major gift fundraising efforts and play a key role in an active capital campaign. This is a high-impact opportunity for a development professional who is energized by building relationships, securing transformational gifts, and contributing to the growth of a developing fundraising program. This role is ideal for someone ready to step into a leadership position, take ownership of a major gift portfolio, and grow alongside an organization with strong momentum. How You'll Have an Impact Help secure the funding necessary to bring a new shelter facility to life Build meaningful relationships with donors who are passionate about animal welfare and community impact Expand the organization's ability to rescue, care for, and place animals in loving homes Contribute to the long-term sustainability and growth of the Humane Society's mission Key Responsibilities Manage and actively cultivate a portfolio of approximately 100-150 qualified and prospective major gift donors Conduct face-to-face donor visits, presentations, and personalized outreach to cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts Play a key role in the execution of an active capital campaign, including donor strategy and major gift asks Identify, qualify, and advance new prospects while deepening relationships with existing donors Collaborate with leadership and campaign stakeholders to align fundraising efforts with organizational priorities Partner with development operations and support staff to ensure accurate tracking and donor stewardship Engage board members, volunteers, and community leaders in advancing fundraising goals Qualifications Proven experience in major gift fundraising, including face-to-face solicitation and closing significant gifts Demonstrated involvement in a capital campaign (leadership or key contributor role) Strong understanding of donor cultivation, solicitation strategy, and long-term relationship management Experience with fundraising CRMs such as DonorPerfect or similar platforms Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and inspire giving Self-motivated, goal-oriented, and comfortable working in a performance-driven environment Preferred Qualifications 5-10+ years of experience in nonprofit development or a related field Familiarity with the Rome and Utica communities and regional philanthropic landscape Experience working within a growing or evolving development program Compensation Competitive salary commensurate with experience, with a target range beginning at approximately $90,000-$120,000 for qualified candidates.
