Job Description

Executive Director - Great Expectations Glenwood Springs, Colorado Great Expectations, a trusted family-focused nonprofit serving Garfield, Pitkin, and western Eagle counties, seeks a visionary and strategic Executive Director to lead the organization into its next era of impact. For more than 40 years, Great Expectations has provided free, confidential, research-based home-visiting services to more than 11,000 families. Our mission is to strengthen and empower families, foster the op5mum development of children, and prevent child abuse and neglect. At Great Expecta5ons, we provide reliable information, guidance, and support for new and expectant parents. Great Expectations team of family visitors work with parents to be about how to care for their baby and themselves. We help ensure families have access to critical information: parent support groups, prenatal care, what to expect during labor and delivery, child proofing, growth and developmental milestones, access to health care, childcare, housing and critical support services, goal setting for personal education and finances. The Executive Director will steward this legacy while strengthening organizational capacity, deepening community partnerships, and ensuring long-term financial sustainability. Role Summary The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive and strategic leader of Great Expectations. Reporting to the Board of Directors and leading a staff of 12 with a $1.4M annual budget, the ED is responsible for organizational vision, culture, financial strategy, and external relationships. This is a primarily in-person role with some hybrid ability based in Glenwood Springs, CO The ideal candidate is a values-driven, relationship-centered leader who listens, builds trust, and strengthens systems that support clarity, accountability, and sustainable growth. The organization seeks a leader who can assess organizational structure, roles, and understand our current team's capabilities while balancing respect for institutional knowledge with the need for clarity, accountability, and growth. Prioritized Critical Success Factors 1. Strategic Vision & Mission Stewardship Lead long-term strategic direction to ensure programs remain aligned with Great Expectations' mission to "strengthen and empower families, foster the optimum development of children, and prevent child abuse and neglect." Champion a culture of learning, reflective supervision, and continuous improvement. Position Great Expectations as a regional leader in maternal and child health. 2. Change Leadership & Organizational Transformation Demonstrate a proven track record of leading organizations through change, growth, or restructuring while maintaining trust and stability. Strengthen internal systems, clarify roles, and improve decision-making processes to support long-term sustainability. Build a culture that embraces innovation, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement. The ED must ensure reflective supervision, with focus on building trust and providing opportunity for growth. 3. Board Governance, Recruitment & Partnership Strengthen Board recruitment, onboarding, and engagement to ensure a diverse, skilled, and active governing body. Build a transparent, collaborative partnership with the Board grounded in shared purpose and strategic clarity. Provide timely, accurate information to support effective governance and fiduciary oversight. The ED is responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing all information necessary for the Board to function properly. 4. Financial Sustainability, Grant Strategy & Resource Development Bring strong financial acumen, including experience managing complex budgets, forecasting, and aligning resources with strategic priorities. Lead a robust grant strategy, including grant acquisition, grant management, reporting, and compliance. Partner with the Director of Development to expand philanthropic revenue and deepen donor engagement. Ensure transparent fiscal stewardship of the organization's $1.4M budget.. The ED is responsible for transparent fiscal management and operating within the approved budget. 5. Community Leadership & Strategic Partnerships Serve as the primary ambassador for Great Expectations, elevating visibility across local, state, and regional networks. Build strategic partnerships with healthcare providers, schools, civic organizations, and human-service agencies. Represent the organization in public forums, media, and community coalitions. The ED is responsible for the enhancement of the organization's image by being active and visible in the local, state and regional community. Strategic Responsibilities Mission & Strategy Work collaboratively with the Board of Directors to create comprehensive strategic plans. Evaluate Great Expectations and the needs of the communities we serve, setting clear, attainable long-term goals, and detailed, accountable steps to achieving those objective. Maintain fidelity to evidence-based home-visiting models. Serve as the organization's primary spokesperson and mission advocate. Financial Leadership Oversee financial strategy, budgeting, and long-term sustainability. Lead grant development, including identification, acquisition, reporting, and compliance. Ensure adherence to all local, county, state, and federal guidelines and contracts. Organizational Leadership Cultivate a healthy, inclusive, and high-performing organizational culture. Oversee hiring, retention, and performance management of staff. Provide ongoing professional development opportunities to ensure continued skills growth of staff. Ensure policies and internal systems reflect best practices and evolving program requirements. Ensure compliance with legal standards and funding requirements by implementing monitoring and risk-mitigation strategies. Board Governance Strengthen Board recruitment and succession planning. Provide the Board with timely information for effective governance. Collaborate with the Board President on agendas, policy updates, and strategic priorities. Community Engagement Build and maintain strategic partnerships that enhance program reach and impact. Represent Great Expectations in public forums, media, and community events. Elevate the organization's visibility and credibility across the region. Professional Qualifications Bachelor's degree or commiserate experience required, Master's degree preferred. Proven results leading organizational change, transformation, or growth, with the ability to guide teams through periods of transition. Demonstrated financial acumen, including budget development, financial analysis, and resource alignment. Three or more years of senior nonprofit leadership experience. Demonstrated success in grant acquisition and management, fundraising, and donor relations. Experience in early childhood, parent education, nursing, social work, or home visiting preferred. Strong communication skills, including public speaking and writing. Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams and engage diverse communities. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred but not required. Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and general database literacy. Compensation and Benefits Compensation for this position is commensurate with experience and education. The hiring range for this position is $115,000 to $135,000 annually.
