Working closely with the Board of Directors, the ED is responsible for guiding organizational growth, supporting program excellence, strengthening fundraising capacity, and ensuring responsible stewardship of the organization's resources and mission. This role is ideal for a collaborative leader who values grassroots nonprofit culture and can help strengthen existing systems while thoughtfully guiding the organization into its next phase of development. We are seeking someone who will build upon the strong foundation already in place while helping the organization grow sustainably and effectively. The ED role has evolved to include responsibilities in organizational strategy, communications, governance, and stakeholder engagement. This job description may continue to evolve in partnership with the Board as organizational needs develop. Key ResponsibilitiesOrganizational Leadership & Strategy Lead and manage daily operations aligned with the mission and strategic plan. Collaborate actively with the Board on strategic planning, implementation, and governance. Identify and manage risks across financial, operational, and reputational areas. Track and report on organizational metrics and progress toward strategic goals. Support organizational development by strengthening systems, workflows, and operational sustainability. Maintain and advance organizational compliance with Assistance Dogs International (ADI) standards, including accreditation requirements, documentation systems, and continuous quality improvement processes. Governance & Transparency Provide bi-monthly written updates to the Board summarizing key developments, priorities, and challenges. Consult the Board in advance regarding major organizational decisions, including: Strategic shifts or new initiatives Contracts over $5,000 or multi-year commitments Public campaigns or major communications Staffing changes, including the creation or elimination of positions Support Board development, compliance, and fiduciary responsibilities. Serve as an ex officio partner to the Board to ensure transparency and alignment. Fundraising & Financial Management Develop and implement fundraising strategies, including grants, donor cultivation, sponsorships, and community campaigns. Build and maintain relationships with funders, donors, and community partners. Oversee financial planning, budgeting, reporting, and regulatory compliance. Ensure strong financial stewardship, accountability, and internal controls. Programs & Team Leadership Supervise, mentor, and support staff and volunteers in a collaborative hybrid remote work environment. Foster a positive and mission-driven organizational culture. Ensure programs are effectively serving the community and meeting quality standards. Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, impact, and client outcomes. Support thoughtful program growth and partnership development aligned with organizational capacity. Ensure program delivery aligns with Assistance Dogs International (ADI) standards and best practices for assistance dog training and placement. (orientation with ADI required) Community & External Relations Serve as the public face of the organization with clients, media, donors, and community stakeholders. Promote awareness of the organization's mission and impact throughout Hawai'i. Represent the organization professionally at community events, partnerships, and public engagements. Champion equity, inclusion, accessibility, and respectful collaboration across all organizational activities. Qualifications Minimum of 5 years of senior management and leadership experience in nonprofits or related sectors. Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. Proven grant writing and fundraising experience, including donor stewardship and partnership development (ex: City and County Grants). Experience supervising staff and managing hybrid remote teams. Demonstrated ability to build consensus, inspire stakeholders, and lead collaboratively. Financial management experience, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial oversight. Proven experience with Canva, Google Workspace, and related digital tools, including Google Docs, Sheets, Drive, Forms, Calendar, Meet, and Gmail. Experience in marketing through social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram preferred. Knowledge of disability etiquette and experience working with individuals with disabilities required. Bachelor's degree or higher in nonprofit management, business administration, social work, or a related field preferred, though equivalent experience will also be considered. Work Environment This is a hybrid remote position with in-person meetings and events on O'ahu. The Executive Director must be flexible and available for periodic evening and weekend hours related to fundraising, community outreach, or organizational events. The role includes interactions with clients, volunteers, community partners, and service dogs.
