About the San Diego Museum Council (SDMC) The San Diego Museum Council (SDMC) is a regional network that connects cultural institutions with audiences and with one another. With more than 100 member organizations, SDMC serves as a vital hub for the San Diego region's museum community. The Council advances the region's cultural ecosystem through networking and professional development, cooperative advertising programs, digital marketing support, and countywide initiatives such as Museum Month in February, The Big Exchange in May, and Kids Free in October. About the Role SDMC is seeking an experienced non-profit/museum professional to serve as Executive Director. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will serve as an innovative, forward-thinking leader with strong organizational leadership skills and deep experience in cultural or nonprofit institutions. They will provide strategic vision and operational oversight, and are charged with overall responsibility for executing the Museum Council's mission to increase awareness, connect, provide services, and advocate for the diverse museums within our membership. The Executive Director currently serves as the sole employee of the SDMC, managing the day-to-day operations, partnerships, fundraising, and marketing, with governance and fundraising support from the Board. Primary Duties & Responsibilities Leadership Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop operational plans that advance the organization's strategic vision and objectives. Serve as a spokesperson for SDMC and advocate for museums across the San Diego/Northern Baja region. Build strong relationships with member organizations, funders, community partners, policymakers, and other stakeholders. Support the Board in strengthening the organization's commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (I.D.E.A.). Advise the Board on all organizational activities, providing timely updates on internal and external issues affecting SDMC. Participate in and support Board meetings (chaired by the Board President). Act as a primary point of contact for members, partners, and the public. Represent SDMC at community events, networking forums, and program activities. Collaborate with and support Committee Chairs; attend relevant committee meetings. Participate in organizational strategic planning. Administration & Operations Oversee day-to-day operations to ensure organizational efficiency and effectiveness. Develop and recommend policies; create and implement procedures in collaboration with the Board. Manage membership engagement, outreach, and marketing through monthly newsletters that reach an audience of approximately 80,000 viewers. Maintain accurate databases of members, committees, and Board members. Manage development and production of organizational materials and collateral. Determine staffing and contractor needs; hire and supervise contractors, vendors, and employees in alignment with the approved budget. Identify and mitigate organizational risks related to people, property, finances, and reputation; ensure appropriate insurance, filings, and licenses. Oversee planning, implementation, and evaluation of SDMC programs and events. Ensure that all programs support SDMC's mission and Board-established priorities. In collaboration with the Marketing Committee, support development and execution of the annual marketing plan. Manage contractors as needed including but not limited to specialists contracted for PR and Marketing and Accounting. Fundraising & Financial Management Work with the Board to develop and implement fundraising strategies, including corporate sponsorships, donor cultivation, and partnership development. Lead grant writing and reporting efforts; identify new funding opportunities to support organizational growth. Monitor member satisfaction, engagement, and opportunities for value-added services. Partner with the Board Treasurer to prepare the annual budget and monthly financial reports. Oversee accurate accounting practices; supervise contract accountant and ensure timely filing of the annual 990 tax return. Manage organizational finances within the approved budget; monitor cash flow, approve expenditures under Board-delegated authority, and oversee accounts payable/receivable, including membership dues. Qualifications 5-7 years of management experience in a nonprofit or cultural institution. Demonstrated commitment to SDMC's mission and values. Proven leadership and relationship-building skills. Bilingual preferred. Skills & Competencies Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to operate both strategically and tactically. High level of organization, project management skills, and attention to detail. Ability to work under deadlines and manage multiple priorities. Strong work ethic and enthusiasm for working across a wide range of functions. Ability to effectively communicate the organization's mission and vision to diverse audiences. Self-motivated. Commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (I.D.E.A.). Experience with financial management, grant writing, and grant administration. Understanding of fundraising and marketing principles. Proficiency in Google Workspace (G Suite), Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook), Zoom, WordPress, and MailChimp. Experience with marketing and partnership building in non-profits preferred. Experience working with membership organizations or museums. $75,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
