JOB SUMMARY
The Operational Risk Effective Challenge Officer is a key contributor to Truist's second line of defense Operational Risk Oversight team, responsible for delivering independent, objective effective challenge for first line execution of the Risk Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) Program. While primary responsibilities of the role focus on the RCSA Program, the scope of effective challenge can extend to other Operational Risk Programs as enterprise needs evolve. The Operational Risk Effective Challenge Officer performs independent reviews of Assessment Unit (AU) activities across the enterprise and applies business-area knowledge, developed through experience, to assess the quality, completeness, and soundness of first line risk and control execution in alignment with RCSA Program requirements.

  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • The following summarizes the essential functions of this role.
Additional duties may be assigned as needed, and specific responsibilities may evolve over time: 1. Performs independent effective challenge responsibilities, in alignment with RCSA Program requirements, for assigned AUs including: + Provides clarity of RCSA expectations and requirements to AU and process owners to support program execution and reinforce proactive risk management behaviors. + Participates in RCSA workshops as needed and provide risk applicability guidance on the Operational Risk Taxonomy, including effective challenge of risk identification based on RCSA Fact Packs and Risk Questionnaires. + Provides effective challenge for AU and process descriptions, inherent risk ratings and rationales, mitigating key controls, and residual risk rationales. This includes issue identification for process or control gaps and completeness of AU process, risk, and control documentation. + Works with the Enterprise Control and Change Office (ECCO), RCSA Program, and ORO Leadership to resolve escalations regarding program non-adherence, observed risk elevation, and/or inadequate mitigating controls, as appropriate. + Ensures effective challenge is thoroughly documented using the required program methods and confirm no unresolved operational risk challenge items remain. 2. Establishes subject matter expertise of the Operational Risk Taxonomy to ensure Operational Risk is consistently and appropriately applied across the enterprise. 3. Maintains an understanding of Operational Risk Frameworks, including RCSA Methodology, Enterprise Internal Controls, and Enterprise Issues Management to drive consistent and accurate effective challenge through the RCSA process. This includes Risk Program guidance on the applicability of mitigating controls (e.g., Model Risk, EUC, Third-Party, etc.). 4. Identifies, assesses, and escalates complex or emerging issues to ORO leadership, facilitating senior-level discussions as needed. 5. Escalates RCSA execution concerns to ORO leadership for inclusion in the Quarterly Business Unit Operational Risk Perspectives. 6. Develops and apply subject-matter expertise across a broader set of Business Units, demonstrating strong analytical capabilities, adaptability, and advanced enterprise awareness to support high-quality effective challenge.
  • Required Qualifications:
  • The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

Bachelor's degree with major in financial-related discipline (accounting, business, finance, etc.) or equivalent education and experience. 2. Seven plus (7+) years of risk management experience operational risk, audit, compliance, quality assurance, or related disciplines. Working knowledge of enterprise Governance Risk and Compliance (eGRC) platforms and tools (e.g., RSA Archer). 3. Demonstrated ability to analyze complex evidence sets, identify deeper risks, and articulate strong effective challenge. 4. Strong understanding of risk assessment principles, control evaluation, and issue management. 5. Ability to influence stakeholders at multiple levels; comfortable challenging senior AU partners. 6. Ability to independently interpret policy and apply judgment in ambiguous or nuanced effective challenge scenarios. 7. Demonstrated capability to coach junior teammates and uplift team quality. 8. Experience operating independently and navigating ambiguity to deliver value. 9. Effective communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. 10. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products. 11. Ability to travel, occasionally overnight.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1. Experience in RCSA execution, oversight, or quality assurance. 2. Audit style testing or validation experience. Risk-related professional certifications. Experience evaluating trends or patterns across multiple processes or business units.
