Job Description
Position Summary The Snow Surfaces Supervisor is responsible for the planning, coordination, and execution of all snow surface operations, to include snowmaking and grooming, and supports terrain park maintenance. This position ensures safe, efficient, and consistent snow conditions in alignment with operational goals and guest use. The Snow Surfaces Supervisor supervises seasonal staff, maintains snowmaking and grooming equipment, and collaborates with Mountain Operations leadership to implement daily and seasonal plans. This position contributes to budgeting, capital planning, and year-round maintenance of trails and infrastructure. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Leadership and Supervision Hire, train, schedule, and supervise employees including snowmaking and grooming staff. Provide performance management, coaching, and disciplinary action as needed. Ensure staff are trained in safe equipment operation and standard operating procedures. Maintain appropriate staffing levels to meet operational needs. Snowmaking Operations Plan and oversee snowmaking operations, including system startup, gun placement, and production management. Monitor weather conditions and adjust snowmaking strategies to optimize output and efficiency. Ensure proper maintenance and operation of pumps, compressors, and associated infrastructure. Track and document water usage and operational data. Maintain inventory of snowmaking equipment, parts, and supplies. Coordinate snow production with grooming priorities. Assist with development and execution of snowmaking system improvements and capital projects. Grooming and Terrain Park Operations Plan and oversee grooming operations to ensure consistent and safe snow surfaces. Establish nightly grooming plans and adjust based on conditions and operational priorities. Operate grooming equipment as required. Support construction and maintenance of terrain park features in collaboration with the Terrain Park Supervisor. Ensure daily inspection and documentation of terrain park conditions. Monitor snow depth, trail coverage, and overall surface quality. Fleet and Equipment Management Oversee the operation, condition, and preventative maintenance of snowcats and snowmaking equipment. Coordinate repairs with internal maintenance staff and external vendors. Update equipment maintenance records and usage logs. Monitor equipment performance and assist with lifecycle planning and replacement recommendations. Maintain inventory of tools, parts, and shop supplies. Operational Planning and Coordination Evaluate weather and snow conditions to inform operational decisions. Participate in Mountain Operations planning and coordination meetings. Coordinate activities with Lift Ops, Marketing, Ski Patrol, Snowsports, Terrain Park, and other departments as required. Communicate terrain status, trail conditions, and operational updates in a timely manner. Financial and Administrative Responsibilities Assist in development and management of departmental budgets. Monitor expenses and support cost control efforts. Assist with capital planning, including equipment replacement and infrastructure improvements. Utilize HRIS (ADP) for timekeeping, scheduling, and personnel documentation. Complete performance evaluations and required documentation in a timely manner. Safety and Compliance Enforce compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Conduct and document safety meetings and training. Identify and report hazards, incidents, and equipment issues. Develop and implement training programs that support a strong culture of workplace safety. Year-Round Responsibilities Assist with on-mountain construction projects during the summer Support summer trail maintenance, including drainage management, erosion control, vegetation management, mountain drainage, and infrastructure protection. Assist with maintenance and snow removal from downhill bike trails. Coordinate and oversee snowmaking system repairs and off-season projects. Minimum Qualifications Must be at least 18 years of age. Experience in snow grooming, snowmaking, or heavy equipment operation required. Supervisory experience preferred. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. Ability to pass a background check. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of snow surface management, grooming techniques, and snowmaking systems. Ability to assess terrain and weather conditions and make operational decisions. Mechanical aptitude and basic equipment maintenance skills. Ability to supervise staff and enforce policies and procedures. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and in variable weather conditions. Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required. Proper cold-weather clothing, protective gear, and adherence to safety procedures are required to ensure personal well-being and maintain safe operations in challenging conditions. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
